Hey all. I'm somewhat new to this forum. I'm a high school junior who is interested in applying to usma and usna. I have good grades, number one in my class, got a 31 on my first act with writing, have a lot of ECs, do volunteer work, and I have lettered every year since freshman year. I have started doing training for the CFA.

After one month I got my scores up to about 7 pull ups, 75-80 sit ups, 6:30-6:45 mile, 9.0 shuttle, mid 70s basketball throw but only about 25 push ups.

My question is do I appear competitive for the service academies and do my CFA scores look alright? How can I improve on my push ups? As it seems the other events improved very quickly for me.

Push-ups and pull ups need some work. Especially push-ups. Remedy: reps and practice...a lot.

Check out all of the stickies at the top of the USMA page for lots of helpful information. There is even a sticky for the Basketball Throw.

In previous years, candidates have found onehundredpushups.com to be helpful.

How would one know if he/she failed any portion of the CFA? I took mine at NASS and haven't received any notifications from either USMA or USNA. Can I safely assume that I've passed?

@tie
Ask your BGO, they can tell you whether you passed or failed. But, good rule of thumb, if you have to ask then you should probably retake it whether you passed or not.

Why would the push-ups need to be worked on when he's already beat the max...?

Push-up max is 75, average is in the 50s, and he did 25. A good rule is if you aren't to average, then you aren't ready to take the CFA. Anything average or above is passing.

Oh my bad, I confused his push-up number with his sit up number. Carry on.

Thanks guys. So it looks like everything is decent but I should really work on push ups?

feet together -- all for the core

RE: push ups – beyond repetition (and a shout-out to http://www.hundredpushups.com/) ...for my DS, form was key. In his day, CFA pushups were to be done feet together, which apparently to some key observers (officers scoring the CFA) was different than APFT style with feet spread about a foot (shoulder width). Many of his peers could do them feet apart but struggled with feet together because if you try both and check yourself you will feel more involvement of your abdominal core group with feet together as you balance. These scoring observers did not count pushups with feet apart (“one, one, one, one, one…”) . So – feet together is (or was, not sure of current instructions) needed, and anything beyond sheer repetitions that can build your core may also help. Bottom line, watch your form, others may care. YMMV
