We're just about a week away from the festivities. Now, being a member of the Class of 2006, this isn't my class year, but I will be in town for SOME of the fun.

This is the 10-year reunion for my cadre, many of whom just made lieutenant commander, which makes me feel a little old.

Last year I attended homecoming with my best friend and classmate. We played in the golf tournament and watched the football game.

This year I'm bringing my girlfriend up from D.C. to eat lunch with the cadets Friday in the Cadet Wardroom. Thursday we'll be in Boston on the set of Disney's "The Finest Hours," a movie about a 1950s rescue of a ship that split in half in 50-70 ft. seas off of Cape Cod.

Should be a fun weekend! I love how CGA "opens up" to returning alumni.... its special when it's your class's year, but it's also fun to attend in an "off-year".

Go Bears! :thumb:

My 2nd cousin is coming for that reunion. Scottish name, soccer goalie. Ring any bells?

Why, yes. He and his wife just had their first baby. Apparently my 3/c son found out before I did.

I was on his first boat my 1/c summer. He's a good guy. I'll keep an eye out for him next weekend.

The "WELCOME HOME" banner is already up on the Alumni Center

We will also be there. Sporting gear from our respective schools, CGA and AFA. Yes, Go Bears, but how 'bout those Falcons?

Wait, is AFA an academy?

I always thought it was a country club.

Might make it down for homecoming on Saturday, I'll be in Groton for firefighting school so we'll have to see. Not sure I'm ready to go back just yet. I still feel like this everytime I see the Gold Star Bridge or the base: :zip:

It'll feel a little different as an officer. It will feel a lot different when none of the current classes were there when you were a cadet. It's also interesting when faculty and staff were once classmates or cadets.

Well, I had a fun weekend in New England. I enjoyed my time on the set of "The Finest Hours," but I signed a nondisclosure agreement, so all I'll say is it should be a great movie.

My girlfriend and I ate lunch with Bravo Company Friday. She was impressed with the Coast Guard Academy, but thought the 4/c cadets at our table seemed terrified. I told her they might just be scared, but that's normal.

I found out 4/c don't do "180 Seconds" during the school year anymore, which was a change from my time as a cadet. I had even prepped the girlfriend for it. The 1/c at the table said "180 seconds all year, that had to be annoying." I said it if was annoying for the upper class, imagine how annyoing it was as a 4/c, sitting at a table with a 1/c or 2/c who kept making you doing it over and over again.... all while you were worried about making it to class on time (especially if there was morning colors to deal with).

All the parents should be happy.... I asked the 1/c at my table if the four 4/c could have carry on for lunch and he OKed it. Side note: as a 4/c we always hoped to get guests at our table that would ask for us to have carry on.... so I wanted to pay that favor forward.

I ran into a member of the class of 2009 who I apparently reported for wearing civvies as a 4/c. It had been 8-9 years, so I didn't really remember it until she mentioned it. I think I was supposed to feel bad, but honestly, a 4/c should know better than to wear civies 40 miles from the Coast Guard Academy.... and it's been 8 or 9 years... time to move on. That said, I was told the radius for civilian attair wearing was reduced from 100 miles to 75 miles.

I talked to one of my favorite professors. All in all, good time. There was a lot of construction but the place looked great!

It's always interesting going back, because it changes so much, still feels like home, but you're also reminded it's someone else's home now.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but YOU WERE IN THE SET FOR THE FINEST HOURS? Is there a film segment shot at the CGA?

And construction? No kidding. I had the opportunity to visit a couple of weeks ago, and almost every building was enveloped in rusty scaffolding. Hopefully it looks great afterwards though. :thumb:

The Finest Hours is about the Pendleton rescue, in 1952. It's off the coast of Cape Cod. The set isn't at the Coast Guard Academy, it was in Mass. We were in Mass. Thursday, and then at CGA Friday.

Good book by Michael Tougias and Casey Sherman.

We are getting new slate rooftops and yes, the buildings that are done look great....just don't ask what the price tag was!
