DS is applying to all his possible sources of nomination, including VP. My question is - do the nominations office and admissions office share information, such that the strength of a recommendation for the VP nomination would be known to admissions (who will otherwise only see the math/English teacher recs)? Are they all part of the same group? DS is getting a great recommendation for the VP nom and it would be helpful if that carried over to the admissions side. Thanks for helping me to understand how the nominations office and admissions office work together.

They "may" but I can't say for certain. I'm a "they probably do" type person...

But a strong package is a strong package...:thumb:

For West Point -
Admissions chooses the 10 who go on the VP slate. Therefore, they see whatever you submit for the VP nom.
Don't just use that rec for the VP, use it also for the MOC noms.

VP Nomination

I am a little confused about the VP nomination application. I don't recall the application requesting a letter of recommendation. The VP Application seems much simpler than the MOC Applications. It was about two pages and a 3500 character essay that is submitted online. Do we have to send more letters of recommendations in addition to the ones already sent to the Service Academies via the portals?

No, if you submit an application for the VP nom, the VP's office will notify the SA(s) that you are eligible. The SAs will use LORs already submitted with your SA app. The SAs will eventually decide who gets the VP nom. Don't forget the VP is like the MOC -- he can only have 5 candidates at each SA at any given time, so only 1 candidate per SA will be charged to him (unless he has 2 open spots). Even though it is a long shot, it gives the SAs another option for you, and that's why all candidates should apply to all eligible sources.

For USNA, at least, the LORs go directly to the admissions office at USNA. VP's office would never see them. That was the source of my original query - someone in Admissions sees them, if only to open the envelope and associate the LOR with the VP nom application. Just don't know if the two groups, that in Admissions and that in the nominations office at USNA, which are at least nominally separate, talk.

I was a little confused by all of the comments about LORs for the VP nom. So, according to USNA admissions, the VP nomination is not asking for additional LORs beyond what was submitted with the application to USNA. The relevant text from USNA website is copied below:

"Apply to: The online nomination application is available at http://www.whitehouse.gov/administration/vice-president-biden/academy-nominations. No additional letters of reference are required. The letters submitted in your USNA application will be sufficient. The essay must be submitted via the online application."

I went back to see why we thought LORs were required, and the VP nomination form itself says:

Letters of Recommendation:
Please send all letters of recommendation directly to the Military Academies.

and then provides the addresses for each academy.

You are absolutely right, it doesn't say they are required, but it mentions where to send them, which introduces some ambiguity.
