My daughter was offered a 3 year AD Scholarship by her school this past April. She began her freshman year and is an MS1. Yesterday she was told that she was on the fast-track to contracting and that depending on what her PT test scores are that she could be contracting at any moment. Does this mean that they will up her scholarship to a 3 & 1/2 year scholarship?

Also, she thinks that she will have to attend drill once a month once she contracts. Is this correct? I thought that drills were only for SMP cadets. Am I wrong?

And she was also told yesterday that she would have to go to a 28 day camp this summer. I am assuming it is the new CIET that Cadet Command has developed. Will she get paid for going? If so, will she be paid as if she is on Active Duty? or Does ROTC have a different pay rate?

Thanks for any and all replies!

First, it's great to hear your daughter is doing well enough to be considered for an early contract. Good luck to her on the APFT.

If they do contract your daughter early then yes, it will mean that her scholarship will be upgraded to either a 3 1/2 or 4 year scholarship, depending on when they contract her.

Unless your daughter is in the National Guard and a SMP cadet, she will not be drilling on the weekend, since she has a scholarship I assume she is not in the NG.

The pay rate for summer training depends on the number of days the type of training. It is usually a certain amount per day but with all the changes these days it's anybody's guess.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the reply! And you are correct, she is not in the Guard or Reserves.

Do you know the amount she would be paid for the 28 day CIET she is going to this summer? Where would we find out the pay chart? (Since I am assume she will not get AD pay.)

.

I may be using the wrong terminology but my MS1 has gone away for a three day wkend at least twice since September. Once for Fall 2014 LTX and once was for RC --(RC doesn't apply towards your daughter). I think he has also had superlabs (all day Saturday) at least once per month as well.

In the past, cadets have only been paid for training that was greater than 28 days. It sounds like the length of CIET, if exactly 28 days, won't qualify for pay unless the regulation changes.

I think if your DS were SMP he would need to drill one weekend a month in addition to the activities that you list.

Very true, but I think the OP was referring to the one weekend a month drill that SMP cadets attend in addition to the ROTC training.

She won't be paid?? WOW!! My daughter will not be happy! She has a job and works over the summer to bank money. If she doesn't get paid, she will not be a happy camper at this new CIET that she is being used as a guinea pig for!! I guess I need to forewarn her that she may not get paid and that she needs to remember the end result....A commission!

don't forget tuition and fees...

I too noticed the convenient number of days they list for training, just under the required amount for payment

I would hope since this will be a required training that CC will pay the cadets as they have with LDAC. It's understandable for training such as Airborne, Air Assault and others since they volunteer for those.

Don't assume she won't get paid for CIET just yet, as I posted above, this is a required training she is being sent to and she could still be paid just as they did with LDAC. Your daughter should just go and ask the HR person in her battalion and see how they are handling payment for CIET. This is all new to ROTC and they probably have not worked out all the details yet.

Jcleppe is correct, I was asking if my DD would have to start drilling as if she were in the Guard/Reserve.

Nofodad - well my daughter already has a full tuition scholarship by the school. So once the scholarship kicks in, yes it will be nice that I don't have to pay for Room & Board, but technically I have to count that as income and pay taxes on the amount - so that's the CON.

But I am hopeful that since this is mandatory training (not optional) that Cadet Command will pay her something!

For the reason you mentioned, the fact that cadets have summer jobs and/or internships lined up, I believe that cadets should be paid for attending these summer camps/training events. That being said, look at the bigger picture. She **IS** getting paid and depending on her school, is getting paid vey well. Her tuition is being paid (my DD received $140K in tuition over 4 years). She will receive $1200 per year for books. She receives free transportation, lodging and food at the training events (my DS went to Guyana for CULP so I imagine that cost was $5000+ easy in real costs and that doesn't take into account the $$ the Army kicks down to the Guyanese Army/Govt).

On top of all that...if she chose the right school, she can also receive free room and board on top of everything else (which worked out to another $45K over 4 years for my DD). So yeah...she'll get paid once contracted :thumb:

Actually, she has to pay taxes on that amount. And (assuming no other income here) the first ~$5500 of earned income doesn't end up being taxed (regardless of dependency status), if her R&B is $10,000, she only ends up paying ~$450 in income taxes on her R&B even if you claim her on your own taxes. And that is more than made up in the monthly stipend which is NOT taxable income.

Thank you k2rider! I do agree with you!

Wow!! I thought since I claimed her, then I had to claim the money! Unfortunately, she does have other income. She maintained part-time employment in HS and took a leave of absence for school. She still plans to work in the summer. But, that is awesome if what you say is true and that the taxes fall on my daughter! That will be so much cheaper than if they fell on me!:thumb:

Consider the following silver lining as presented by Clarkson-

"R&B is calculated based on the cost of housing up to $10K. What the Cadet gets paid is what the school says the cost of housing plus board (meal plan) is. After talking to my HRA it sounds like theoretically Cadet Smith could figure out how to make some money on the deal if she/he was creative."

and this wisdom from Bull

"Less money spent on rent equals more money spent on beer. Win win."

I recall my son getting a bill from the IRS for taxes on that first $5,500 (or whatever it was then). The IRS did not consider the R&B grant to be earned income.

Maybe this is what my accountant was talking about that DS didn't have to pay taxes on his scholarship. He was a MSI last year, so he only receive $5,000. for R&B for the fall. So it must not have been enough to tax. We will see about this year?
