So our choices for UPT are:

Vance AFB
Columbus AFB
Laughlin AFB

What order are you all considering?
I know I am putting Laughlin last.

Thanks!

Which means of course you will get Del Rio! :shake:

Old salt, not sure if you are joking or serious?

Pima,
Serious. All Navy pilots start in P-cola, but can head to Vance, Whiting (Milton, FL) or Corpus Christi for primary training.
Are AF students no longer training with the Navy?
OS

Yep, that ended at least 18 months ago. The AF decided that it just wasn't working. Biggest reason was the Navy was just taking too long compared to the AF counterpart bases. The other opinion is that it didn't make sense to train pilots the Navy way when they would be flying for the AF.

Aseanag,
Sheppard is ENJPPT. It is not an option unless they were picked up for ENJJPT by the board.

JMPO, but at the end of the day your life will be ...
Academics/flying 12 hours a day M-F
Home...eat dinner...chair fly and study 4 more hours M- F
Relax Saturday
Commissary/laundry Sunday...study starting Noon!

Doesn't really matter where you go because you really will spend your life studying for a year!

OBTW DS never wants to be at Laughlin ever again!

Well I am married as well, no kids yet. Not sure which city is best for my wife. She can do school from anywhere. We just don't know what factors to consider, because as you said for me it is the same anywhere.

When you say do school,do you mean finish her degree or do you mean she is a teacher. If it is the latter,than she should see if her license is reciprocal for all three states.

Many of the wives and fiances form a tight knit group, so even if she doesn't find a job, she will probably find her days volunteering or socializing. When DS winged out of Laughlin at the formal all of the wives and significant others took a group picture. They all knew each other. Our DS was engaged and his fiance lived in NC, but flew out every 6-8 weeks for a week at a time, yet she knew all of the other girls. They may have been closer because Laughlin is in the middle of nowhere.
~ That is an upshot for bases like Laughlin, they socialize a lot more because there are less options to do things off base.

I have had friends that have been stationed at all three. Personally for me as a wife I would choose Columbus, but that is my personality. If your family lives in the Midwest than Vance is probably a better option.

From a student perspective it really doesn't matter. The drops will be about the same and you can't guess/game which one will drop the 22 or maybe 35 from any of those bases. They all will wing around the exact same time. Some students fear that Columbus will have more bad weather than the other bases.

Our DS placed Laughlin as last and he got Laughlin.

I would suggest your DW visit baseops.net and look under the Military spouses forums. She might get an idea of which base she likes more or the very least see what life might be like. They have at the top of the page pinned those three bases.

OBTW, a little off topic, but on topic. If you do a DITY, make sure you do it right! Many 1st timers, miss out on valuable weight. IE weigh the car truck completely empty!
~ if they do move you, and you do a partial DITY look at what you are packing. DITY things that are small in size, but heavy in weight!
~~ IOWS barbells can fit under your car seats. If you have 2 of each, 5,10,25. That is a 100 lbs taking up no room at all. Clothes are light, take what you will need until you move in. Her college books would be also optimal to take compared to your Xbox!
~~ Beware some movers will not allow liquids or spices to be transported via the military. DITY them. They may not weigh a lot, but the replacement cost is a lot! It could cost 200+ just to replace all of the spices, oils, vinegar, laundry detergent that they made you pitch.
~~ If they pack you out, and you own an SUV with a removable seat, consider packing that with your HHGs. It will give you more room for your partial DITY. A little loophole in DITY is you can remove that and the spare, weigh the car, than put it back in and consider it part of the DITY. Reason why is by reg you could ship it with your HHGs. Everyone does that trick!

Congrats on your selection, but the bigger question impo you should be thinking about is what will you do if you have to wait like most cadets 6 months before reporting.

PS you might want to pm Fencer. One of her twins was at Laughlin, the other was married and stationed at Vance. She maybe able to give you insight from her DS on what life was like for his wife at Vance.

Wow! This was so very helpful, thank you for taking the time to spell it all out. Loved the comment about the xbox!

We live in texas currently so I am leaning towards Columbus. You mentioned that would be your pick, why is that?

Thank you again!

The Mrs.

I am a Jersey girl and as a wife it more my speed.
~ That is why I say she should lurk on baseops

The fact is you have no control over this issue.

The best piece of advice I was ever given is this:
Your tour will be what you make it out to be!

Laughlin is not somewhere anyone desires to pick as number one, but, you know what? You will make friendships that last a lifetime! You will look back in a decade from now and laugh your butt off about the memories you made....as long as you are open to it!

These are hard days for you as a student. Been there, done that and collected a check! I embraced OMG NO Alamagordo (LIFT...IFF now). When Bullet was sent to Mt. Home for FTU F111 I was not a happy camper...my friends and family joked about how I was going to BF Eqypt! I ended up loving it...I spent my days at the base woodshop and framing!
~ When he was stationed in AK with the Strike, I was thrilled! Snow didnt bother me, and yippee skippee, I was finally near a town that had a real mall and restaurants. Downside....sucks to be somewhere and watch Olive Garden commercials and no Olive Garden!
~~~ Insane, right? Just realize when you can't get their salad or bread sticks and watch the commercial you will want it!
The point is embrace it no matter where you go! Trust me in hindsight you will look back and think of it fobdly! Yes, even Del Rio! The two of you will see and experience parts of the country your friends will never see.
~ Goldsboro NC is not a happening place, but it is an hr from Raleigh and the beaches! The town is military and when you compare it to a place like Andrews, you can feel like it is home.
Like I said it all comes down to how Ihe two of you embrace your assignment.
DS Dityd and made a nice paycheck. Several thousand, but he also really investigated every regulation.
Beware it can take time to get reimbursed. I think it was 6 weeks after reporting in before they got it straightened out.
You will get the career starter loan. BE SMART!
~ DS took only 10k. 5K for moving and 5k into an IRA
~~ He purchased a new car using their financing. Many car dealers offer 0% financing.
Read the fine print on that starter loan.
~ IF you wash out and the AF separates you, the loan will go to over 20%.
~ Buy a car with that loan, and you are paying interest at a higher rate than car dealers usually offer.
Just things to start to investigate now.
Pima, in case you find yourself banished to someplace without an Olive Garden...:thumb:
Olive Garden Breadsticks
Ingredients
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
3/4 teaspoon active dry yeast
1 cup plus 1 tablespoon warm
water (105 to 115 degrees F)
16 ounces bread flour (3 cups)
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, softened
On top:
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
Cooking Directions
Dissolve the sugar and yeast in the warm water in a small
bowl or measuring cup and let the mixture sit for 5 minutes,
or until it becomes foamy on top.
Combine the flour and salt in a large bowl. Use the paddle
attachment on a stand mixer to mix the softened butter into
the flour. If you don't have a stand mixer, use a mixing spoon
to combine the butter with the flour. When the yeast mixture
is foamy, pour it into the flour mixture and use a dough hook
on your mixture to combine the ingredients and knead the
dough for approximately 10 minutes. If you don't have a stand
mixer, combine the ingredients and then knead the dough
by hand on a countertop for 10 minutes.
Place the dough in
a covered container and let it sit for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, until it
doubles in size. When the dough has doubled, measure out 2-ounce portions
and roll the dough between your hands or on a countertop
to form sticks that are 7 inches long. Place the dough
on parchment paper-lined baking sheets, cover and set aside
for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until the dough doubles in size once
again.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
Bake the breadsticks for 12 minutes, or until golden brown.
When the breadsticks come out of the oven, immediately
brush each one with melted butter and sprinkle with a little
garlic salt.
Makes 12-13 breadsticks
:shake: sheriff thank you, but still its that taunting of the commercials! :rolleyes: that make you realize you miss things that you never would have wanted had you not been told....sorry you can't have that! :confused:
Back on topic. Let us know when you find out. OBTW also be prepared for your RNLTD to change. DSs changed three times.
I will keep you updated! Thanks again for the help.
So since it changed 3 times, what ended up being the actual EAD date?
Also, rumor has it when you get assigned your station you should call about housing ASAP?
Unless something has changed you need actual orders in hand. That is usually 6-9 weeks out.
I am not sure I would be worried as a married member. Fencers DS got in right away at Vance. Hornet got in right away at Laughlin.
DSs date ended up being Sept 30th, casual status at Laughlin until Feb for IFS.
I'm sure these are all nice bases, but Vance is very well received in the community. We love our airmen & women!
