Are branches specific to bases? Meaning, when a cadet (ROTC or WP) choses a branch s/he wants after commissioning, are there specific bases/posts for each branch s/he can choose from?

Is there a list anywhere that shows where each branch could be assigned?

Yes. I believe we get a slide showing post allocations sometime after we receive our branches. I'm not sure how it works for ROTC though

Cadets rank the branch(es) they want in order.

Don't you rank the post(s) you want also? Is this done at a different time? I was under the impression on Branch night (for WP) you find out your branch and post at the same time, but maybe that's incorrect. If that is correct, I'm just wondering how you know what post(s) you can list.

Sorry -- I just reread your post BigBear. It sounds like you get the Branch first, then post options.

Answers to your questions: Kind of, yes, and maybe.

Not all branches are at every post, so yes, branches are kind of specific to bases, but a base is not entirely one branch. Yes, since the new officer will have to go to a post that has his/her branch, it will limit the posts they can choose from. I'm not sure if there is an official list published anywhere, but you can do some internet surfing and probably find out what branches could be assigned to what posts. ROTC grads sometimes also don't find out their post until they are already in BOLC, and that can depend on their branch.

Yes, ROTC cadets list their posts at the same time as they list their branches.

We get our branches on Thursday but do not select posts until sometime in the spring

In terms of the 16 or so branches cadets can choose from, all of those branches exist at at every operational post, but not at the administrative posts (i.e. you will not be an infantryman at Fort Belvoir).

Remember that not every post will necessarily be available, especially for low-density branches. Even if a branch exists at a post, they may not need 2LTs there.
