I am new to this forum. I have been nominated for the USMA class of 2019 and wondering if anyone on here can give me any advice as to what the road ahead is, as I was not expecting a nomination to West Point. Thanks

You say the nomination to USMA was unexpected. Did you not ask for a nomination to USMA, but rather to another service academy? Did you receive multiple nominations?

If your Member of Congress nominated you to USMA and you don't complete the application, you won't receive an appointment.

I originally had put in for USNA but listed USMA as a #2 just bc I had to put a #2, and I just recently submitted my app to USMA upon receiving a single congressional nomination to USMA. I'm not exactly sure how the SOE process works, because I already have letters of recommendation from math and science teachers, and I'm not certain if I need to get new ones.

I would speak with your nomination source, you can still go to usna just apply next year. If you wash out of usma because you don't like it you are taking off one qualified person who may have done well, also nomination doesn't mean acceptance.

You must mean you submitted an "initial" app and are waiting for the full portal to open. If the portal opens, you will see that you need to submit names and emails for Math teacher, English teacher and either Chemistry or Physics teacher. It doesn't matter if you did this already for Navy. They won't transfer. Let your teachers know to be on the lookout for another one from USMA.

It might behoove you to call your regional commander and tell them that you received a nomination and would like to get going on your application. He/she will let you know if you are competitive enough for them to open the portal. I don't know for sure, but they might do it anyway since you have a nomination. I would call just because it's late November and time is of the essence. In the meantime, get your transcript sent in. That's something you can do right now. Your portal will probably be open by the time it gets there.

And MOST important if you are going to consider USMA, go get into your ACT/SAT account and pay to have your scores sent. Like right now! That will be the biggest indicator to USMA of whether or not you are competitive.

I have a candidate portal already open with the list you are talking about. Will I need to submit my ACT/SAT scores from the organizations themselves, or will USMA just look at them on my transcript? As for the SOE, I'm assuming that they only will accept electronic communication with the selected teachers, and they won't accept the letters of recommendation that I have already gotten ahold of?

I understand, I am just curious as to what the best way is to tackle the appointment process. I am getting all of my stuff in early as that seems to be the best way to let the admissions office know I am interested and am trying hard to get the appointment

You'll have to submit the SOE's contact info electronically. They will then contact the teachers independently.

Yes, they might see the ACT/SAT score on the transcript, but, if it was me or my son, I'd pay to get them sent in. You need to start getting green checks on that portal.

That does sound like a much better idea. Thank you for the help!

Pro-tip: Let your teachers know the situation about the SOE's and to be on the lookout for it in their email. You don't want it to get buried and ignored.

Does it matter if it's a junior year vs. senior year teacher? This is my second year of physics and my math teacher last year wrote me a good letter of rec and I would bet he would write me a good SOE.

IIRC, it's supposed to be junior year since they had you for a full academic year. Not sure on that though. My son did junior year but he had all the SOE's in by August.

That's what my guidance counselor had told me. The problem is that my old physics teacher is gone, and I have been trying to track down her new place of employment so I can get her email address. I'm sure my teacher this year would write me one, but he hasn't had me a full academic year. Sounds like I need to quickly get ahold of my old teacher.

Your teacher recommendations can be from any year as long as it is English, math, physics or chemistry and they can speak to your abilities since they taught you.
