I have a relative who says after listing military for potential schools for the PSAT, he received an email from admissions saying that he was chosen to receive more information which includes a guide to VMI. Is this a generic email sent to those who've requested info or listed military as their school of preference?

Yes. My second son just received one as well. We were laughing at the "nomination" part on the envelope--VMI must know their audience includes kids looking at service academies, where that could actually mean something! "You are nominated . . . to continue being on our mailing list" LOL!

Lol that's hilarious. Did it also say "These guides will put you one step closer to our network of alumni, and your selection as a promising candidate for VMI?" The way they sell it does make it confusing

Well if you took offense to all that, sincerest apologies. But it is humorous to be nominated to an email list. No malice intended towards VMI.

Wow, really.

If you can't see the humor in the generic mailings almost all these school send out to anyone that lists military service on the PSAT, then you need a better sense of humor.

Once my son checked that box he received these generic letters from all the schools above and found each to be equally humorous. The humor was directed at the letters, not the schools themselves.

Frankly, I think my post to AFwifeClaire and Pknguyen44 is more humorous than the recruiting efforts they're bashing... just one opinion. No offense taken, I think it's funny too--;)

I'm not bashing anything! We just thought it was funny! :) The actual letter inside was the same exact template as every other college mailing. "You are so special . . . here's a free guide to help you decide on college-y stuff . . . blah, blah, blah . . ." No more nomination references!

And hey--I have 10 kids, so I think of anyone, I am allowed to laugh at college recruiting efforts . . . because by the time I'm through, I will literally have seen it all, I'm sure!

Well Said--and with 10 kids, you deserve all the help, and laughs, you can get! Money may not be an issue for your family, but 10 kids and college means a ton of $$ these days! Here's a bit of help you may not have seen in any recruiting pamphlets, for what it's worth...
You may already know this, but when researching colleges, check out the "percentage of need met" section in the college guides. To boil it down, this defines how much a college can help pay for your kid's education, if needed. Because VMI has the largest per capita endowment of any public college or university in the USA, this percentage is very high for VMI. It's what enables VMI to step in and assist many cadets (myself included) with their college costs. Your kids may not need assistance with money now, but if life happens, and when it happened to me, VMI was there.
