I know I am a little late to the party for applying, but I have a few questions. My first choice is USNA, but have decided to pursue NROTC as a backup. I have already been accepted to my back up school. I've been accepted into a Tier 3 program and want to know if it is even worth applying this late? In addition, how often to ROTC mids get their first choice for service selection?

In regard to your last question, academy grads get the same consideration as rotc grads when it comes to service selection. In that respect, they are all seen equally.

NROTC

They can't award you a scholarship if you don't apply. Likely will be fewer T3 but don;t let that stop you.

including SEALs and Marine Corps?

SEALS yes. Marine Corps, no. NROTC midshipmen know if they're going Navy or Marine from day 1. You can only apply for a Navy option or Marine option scholarship... not for both.

How is SEALs selection affected?

The way I read kinnems response is yes you have the same chances as USNA for Seals, but if you want Marines and the scholarship you have to apply Marine Option. You can't apply both Navy and Marine. Just one or the other.

The selection rate for seals is slightly lower from nrotc than the academy. Roughly 30 per year from academy and 15 from nrotc. The academy mids have basically been prepping for 4 years for BUDS and nrotc mids mostly training on their own. All other service selection percentages are essentially the same.

Absolutely correct, Pima!

Once you are a midshipman, the switch from Navy to Marine, if you have the support of the MOI, is pretty easy.
The switch from Marine to Navy is just as easy with one caveat. You must have successfully completed your physics and calculus requirements.
The SEAL selection process, as TERP noted, favors the Academy. I would argue ROTC mids have the same opportunity, but fewer qualify. If you do well at mini-buds, you have a good chance of getting picked up regardless of commissioning source. Academy mids seem to show up better prepared.

Terp is right. This year 14 NROTC mids got Bud/s. One is at my son's unit....you can imagine there are a lot of mids excited about EOD/Seals at his unit!

Thanks for all the help! Should have specified I was looking for info on aviation. Good to know!
