Hi!
So I just received my nomination today for NY. I called to see if I received the principal nomination and unfortunately I didn't. But, I was told that I am one of the most highly competitive candidates and my ranking is reflective of that. Does that mean I should have gotten the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th nomination slot? Or is just assumed that everyone who receives a nomination is highly competitive? Also, what are my chances now of getting into USMA?

Thank you!

As said before we can't chance you. First check to see if there is even a principal nomination or a competitive nomination where there is a pool of candidates. Highly competitive could mean top 2 or it could be top 5 you will never know. If you can get more nominations on hand you have more of a chance at acceptance. Check in when your senators' nominations come out to ask how well you ranked. You could be 40th in the state or you could be the 11th and just missed the slate. If you are really lucky you will get the senators' nominations and be able to compete at that level. The system is a mystery to those outside and I think it would be a bad idea to ask too much other than what you could improve and how close you made it to the mark. Good luck

I should have specified which nomination. I received a nomination from my Congresswoman. Does that make a difference?

A nomination from a congressman or senator doesn't matter other than the competitiveness of each pool, but getting multiple nominations boost your chances of an appointment.
If you are in the pool for a senator it's much more competitive because your competing against your state. When in your district you may have 5 other applicants or you may have 40 other applicants applying it depends on a lot of factors. Many times the more competitive districts end up with 2-3 applicants being appointed because some are given nominations from other sources. Hope this helps!

USMA_2019, I suspect your original assumptions would be accurate. It sounds like the MOC office dropped a hint that you're in the upper half. Many NY upstate MOCs are marginally competitive (3-5 strong candidates), if that is where your at.

I agree.

Congrats on your (and family support) work the last few years.

DS got nomination in 2013 for NY as well, and enjoyed trips to Norwich, West Point and Annapolis. Liked Army and that was his nomination. Eventually went plan B for Army ROTC and now it seems like a plan A choice.

Good luck,

I believe the lack of competition in some areas has driven NY upstate MOCs to use the ranked slate options. Unfortunately, not many get appointments through the NWL.

I am part of one of the most competitive districts in NY state. I head from my field force rep that there are only about 10 other competitive candidates in my area, and one of them told him that USMA is her second choice.

Now you simply wait

Your Congressman's ranking only matters if she submitted the nominations with ranking (I can't remember what the term is). MOCs have three choices in general - principal, ranked, and unranked. Ranked or whatever the term is West Point is supposed to offer the appointment to qualified candidates as ranked by the MOC. Unranked or what it is called, West Point picks whoever they want from the nominated candidates.

One is called competitive alternate, but I'm not sure if that's the ranked or unranked slate.

Kinds of MOC slates 101:

1) Competitive:
- ten unranked names are submitted
- WP then rank orders those names according to the WCS
- the candidate who is fully qualified with the highest WCS is offered admission
- this is the most common method MOCs use

2) Principal with Numbered Alternates:
- Candidates are listed in order of preference with a Principal nominee and then alternates numbered 1-9.
- the Principal is offered admission IF fully qualified
- if Principal is disqualified, then the 1st alternate is evaluated and offered the appointment if found qualified and so on down the list until the highest numbered alternate who is qualified is offered admission.

3) Principal with Competing Alternates:
- principal is listed with alternates 1-9 not numbered.
- the Principal is offered admission IF fully qualified
- if Principal is disqualified then the next fully qualified alternate with the highest WCS (Whole Candidate Score) is offered admission
