Nomination and rolling admissions?

According to my DS's BGO, he has been deferred. He received a MOC nomination. He had two nomination sources already, Presidential and ROTC. With rolling admissions, I was told that when your application changes, they review again. Does anyone know if adding a MOC nomination would be change enough to flag for a review at the next board? Also, anyone able to shed light on a deferred status? Doesn't sound very good. :frown: Also curious...does a MOC nomination help a candidate vs. a presidential since it's a bit more competitive?

Did his BGO say why his application has been deferred? It seems that being deferred means something in his application is deficient -- ACT/SAT scores, GPA/academics, CFA, ECs or athletics. If it's deferred because it's not as competitive, or his WCS is not as high as other candidates, having a nomination (while required) is not going to help.

Your DS should ask his BGO what he can do to make it more competitive. Not sure if there's time to take the ACT/SAT again (that's usually the easiest thing to improve at this late date).

Having 3 nominations is great, but the MOC nom doesn't hold more weight than the other two unless your DS is the Principal nom. It just gives the SA another option to charge the candidate if they want to offer an appointment. Only 100 Presidential noms will be charged; a much smaller number of ROTC noms (10?) will be charged. Those with a MOC nom that aren't charged to the MOC (ie Principal, 1st on slate) go to the NWL.

I'm certain it's his ACT score. Only has a 28 and though taking it multiple times, it hasn't budged. Curious though, if he's not as competitive as others...why not just deny. Why deferred? Does deferred usually end with a TWE?
 
Is his packet 100% complete? This happened to my son last year and if I remember correctly it just meant that it was not ready for review due to incomplete information.

He's been a 100% complete since September 1, including nomination. If you don't mind me asking...did your DS's deferral lead to an appointment?

Considering all other things, a 28 ACT score is pretty good (but what are his math and english scores?). If his math and/or english scores are below 25, that is a better indication than his composite score.

Has he submitted his CFA and scored at least above average on everything?

His RC or BGO would have a better idea of why his application was deferred, what it means and what he can do to change that.

Sometimes the process doesn't make sense. Sometimes the outcome doesn't make sense. It's not always cut-and-dry (to applicants & parents) as to why one candidate gets an appointment and another does not.

(Example: my DS, 35 ACT single sitting (34 english, 35 math, 36 science, 36 reading); wgpa 4.6 at graduation, uwgpa 3.9 at grad; rank 9/504; 7 AP classes, 2 dual-credit classes; 4 yrs varsity swimming, captain, State qualified 4 yrs; Boy Scouts; Boy's State; 2 yrs part-time year-round job lifeguarding; hundreds of volunteer hrs; above avg CFA scores; CVW spring of jr year; congressional nom; non-recruited athlete, non-URM -- March 2014 = QNS (TWE) for USNA.

USMA -- same as above + SLE; senator nom (competitive alternate) = January 2014 appointment)

He made it all the way to the waitlist and then got the TWE. Now that i remember it was the fact that his DODMERB was still up in the air and he was deferred due to that. We were scared at first as you are because the word deferred just doesnt sound good. We communicated directly with his admissions counselor and not the BGO. She explained to us that since he was deferred that it meant he would miss that Thursdays review board and once DODMERB was settled he would go in front of the board. I dont think it is a bad thing at all but maybe one of the experts can chime in. Good luck and beat Army!
 
First of all, your BGO should not be telling you Admissions Board status. We are specifically told not to tell candidates because status can and does change and nothing is official until CGO contacts the candidate.

The main reason a candidate is deferred is CGO wants more info -- usually first semester grades or new SAT/ACTs. If that is the case, your RD should contact you and let you know what else/additional they want.

The other reason is they want to see more candidate records before they make a decision. This typically happens earlier in the year, so I'm guessing it's the reason above.
