Would a C senior year severly impact admissions? I currently have a B in the class, but it is low.

What class is it?

Are you getting a B/C because the class is difficult, or because you are slacking off?

Keep chuggin'! Calculus is important to the Academy. They want to see at least a B.

Why don't you try studying an extra hour a day on your weak points and try to ace the exams

It is good to know someone, somewhere, has the exact same problem as me...I have to get a 70 on my exam next week to get a B with the added 4 AP points. Which sounds easy enough, but that's what I thought about my 9 weeks test, and that did not turn out the way I expected. Looks like it's studying calculus every day until next week...

Get used to it. USMA will not be fun for you if you are struggling with Calc

EI: EXTRA INSTRUCTION.

PAY a tutor. Don't wait. It won't get easier.

Honestly, if you need to pay a tutor to get through Calc you should probably just pursue other options. The math at USMA doesn't get any easier

There could be several reasons why our OP is having some difficulties with higher math. maybe he lacks some basic fundamentals which a tutor can pick up on, while sitting in a classroom with thirty other students, a teacher may not realize this problem.

I do agree though that difficulty in math can be a red flag.

make sure you are REALLY taking the time to study and do all the homework. No distractions. Put in an extra 90 minutes per day if necessary.

You can do this if you really want it, and if you are dedicated! But you must knuckle down and do the work.

teacher

Hang in there with Calculus. It may be your teacher doesn't teach well. Please Google "Jill Bell Calculus" to look at her videos. My children had her in high school and her videos have been helping students nationwide and - no cost to watch them! Even some of her students now in college refer back to her videos to help them with their college calculus.

Have you tried going over that 9 week exam with your teacher? Understanding what went wrong there might help a lot with the final... or not... but it certainly is worth a try if you haven't done it.

Come on...

And if USAFA wanted you, one C probably won't make a difference. Just do your best. If you are meant to get in... you'll get in.

Well, I got it back today and it was less a case of "I didn't know the material" and more of "holy crap I only had 15 minutes left to answer everything." But I agree that it is a good idea and I plan on going back to look over it before my exam. The fact I lost my time management does mean there are things I need to look at.

Don't take chances with your future...

Like I have told my friends, I do not intended to look back in twenty years and identify this time period as why I am not doing what I love.

Please Google "Jill Bell Calculus" to look at her videos.

Thanks, I'll give that a look. I wish there was something for physics too, but my grade is a pretty stable B right now, so I have to prioritize.

I figured as such. I guess the next week will be "natural selection" of sorts - if I can't hack AP Calc in High School, then I agree I probably won't hack it at USMA, with other college classes, a sport, PT, drill...the list probably goes on.

I wouldn't assume that if you do poorly on Calculus now that you will necessarily do poorly on Calculus at an academy. Calculus is a subject that sometimes takes a while to "go click" for a student. I think I got a solid B in AP Calculus in high school, but honestly it never made sense to me. I did two semesters in college which made a little more sense and I did well enough but I still didn't feel like I understood what I was doing. Calculus never went click for me until I started using it heavily in a 400 level Economics course! Go figure.

Another anecdote... I majored in Computer Science in college back in the days just after the abacus. My second semester of freshman year I got a D in what was considered the weed out course... Assembler Programming where you're writing code right to the level of the metal. I had to wrestle with changing my major (couldn't carry a D in a required major course) or re-taking it. It never made sense to me the first time around, but the second time I took it, with a different instructor, it suddenly made terrific sense. It came easily at that point.

Not saying which way you should go but there is a good possibility that repeating Calculus may solve all your "problems" with it.

@ kinnem: thanks for the feedback. I sure hope a second walk through will make it click. I agree that different teacher can make a huge difference. My calculus teacher is all right, but I just struggle with math in general. My physics teacher on the other hand...well, I have already figured out I will have to wait until college for me to truly be taught physics. My calc grade has made some marginal improvement over the last 24 hours, so my situation doesn't look so dire. Doesn't mean for a second I'm not gonna study my butt off after the ACT this weekend.

Curra, I noticed that you mentioned you'd have to study Calc every day this week. Especially if you have some difficulty, you should be studying it EVERY DAY EVERY WEEK. Just one mother's nosy advice.
