DS and I were conversing over the Thanksgiving break about the commitment to AD vs NG vs Reserve in the Army.

AD = 4 YEARS ACTIVE + 4 YEARS IRR , DUTY BASE AT THE PLEASURE OF USA

NG = 8 YEARS, TIED TO A CERTAIN STATE, POSSIBLY LIVING IN A DIFFERENT STATE THAT IS CLOSE TO YOUR UNIT FOR PURPOSES OF DRILL.

RESERVE = 8 YEARS, NOW HERE IS THE QUESTION...
1) IS ONE ASSIGNED TO A RESERVE UNIT OR DOES THE MEMBER GET TO CHOOSE?
2) IN THE EVENT YOU GET A JOB THAT REQUIRES RELOCATION DURING YOUR ENLISTMENT CAN YOU SWITCH UNITS? IS THAT DIFFICULT TO DO?
3) IS IT DIFFICULT TO CHANGE MOS'S DURING THE 8 YEARS?
4) IF YOU ARE CALLED UP , SAY FOR A 1 YEAR DEPLOYMENT DOES THE ENTIRE 1 YEAR COUNT TOWARDS THE 8 YEAR OBLIGATION? ( WHAT DOES 1 YEAR FULL TIME EQUATE TO IN RESERVE YEARS?)
5) IF ONE IS IN THE RESERVES WHAT DOES A NORMAL MONTHLY SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE?
6) HOW OFTEN IS TRAINING DONE? WHEN, WHERE LENGTH OF TRAINING AT ONE TIME?

As always thank you for any information you can offer. :thumb:

1) I have read on this board that the Member gets to choose but the wording was "the newly minted 2nd LT needs to find a unit that has an opening in the MOS that he desires"

2) Supposedly much easy that if you go NG

5 & 6) The guys I work with go one weekend per month and then for (2) weeks over the Summer. They stay local on the weekends but I have no idea about the longer stints.

A year served in reserves is one year of your obligation (deployed or not). A year served active duty is one year of your obligation.

So theoretically one could be called up multiple times during an 8 year reserve commitment and actually serve more time in an AD capacity than a person that went in straight AD in the first place? Thank you both QA 1571 and k2rider for your responses.

You are correct as far as you go. I believe the guys who go AD still have a 4 year reserve commitment afterwards, so it could be awash.

But isn't their reserve commitment IRR?

You can serve full time (active duty) in the Army for three years (four years for scholarship winners), with the balance in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR).

I'm thinking it's 6 in guard or reserve and 2 in the irr for officers in the reserve component.
