My son has wanted to go to USAFA since he was 11 years old and has prepared himself for the challenge well and would consider him a superstar candidate. He learned a girl from his school got a LOA from the USAFA -- guess she is more of a superstar. Does this pretty much blow him out of the water with USAFA since I know they compete with other candidates in the same area or district. He is EA but hasn't heard anything yet. Thanks in advance for insight -- just like most anxious parents!

No it does not. There are several ALO's on this board that will tell you they have sent more than one kid from their area in the same year. As long as your son gets a NOM and is 3Q'd, he is still in the running. Hang in there!

It is important to understand how appointments and charging works.
The LOA candidate only needs a nomination for an appointment. They will still use the WCS for charging the nomination to the MOC.
She might be the superstar to USAFA when they gave the LOA, but when the board meets and scores everyone, your DS may be the highest WCS. Thus, both will be appointed.
I don't know if you are talking Congressional or Senator, but either way it doesn't matter. The reason why is I highly doubt they know every kid on that slate. Theoretically, there could be 9 LOAs and one non-LOA. In the end all 10 could be appointed if the non-LOA had the highest WCS or was named principal.

It is not uncommon for more than one applicant from the same school to rcv appointments...or even from the same family for that matter, Fencersmom has twins that are USAFA grads!

You think being in the same school is hard on competition, you need to speak with fencermother. She has twin boys, both wanted the academy, both received appointments, both attended the academy, both graduated the academy in 2012, and both are Air Force officers doing well.
I don't think the competition can get any closer than that. Remember, the academy looks at the whole package. If your son has the whole package, then he has a good chance.

You forgot to add one had an LOA and one didn't!
She is lucky now because they are in 2 different airframes as pilots.
The funny thins is that twin thing is still going...both went heavies and both got married within a day of each other....a year apart, but still.

I had two young ladies from the same school a year ago...both are outstanding 3rd Class cadets at USAFA!
And they're not the first "twins" I've had.

. Want to talk multiple kids from one school? Try living in the Springs. My DS's senior year had 4 kids apply (that he knew of) in his high school and that doesn't even account for the other high schools in the area. One got accepted and my DS went Prep as far as I know the others in the school didn't make it. I can't even imagine how many kids apply out of Air Academy High School.
Yes, I hear the Springs is very competitive. We are in the Dallas/Fort Worth area which I hear is another USAFA hot spot and very competitive. I feel better after hearing from all that my original concern was unfounded in that they do appoint, or can appoint more from one school. At least we still have a dog in the hunt -- that's a Texas saying

Yes, the one on the grounds of USAFA, Colorado School District 20. In my class there were about a dozen applicants...and as it turned out three (3) received appointments and entered with the class of 1982. Three (3) were offered varying prep school slots and entered with the class of 1983. So AAHS '78 had SIX at USAFA! And now with the school being larger than it was, plus the growth in the Springs since I was in high school, I'm sure it's tougher than ever!
Then again, I would imagine so is Annapolis, MD...and the surrounding areas near WP and the other SA's.

I'm from Annapolis and went to high school there. I'm not sure if my particular school had multiple USNA entries each year I was there, but there was at least one a year (with several applicants). And some got NAPS or whatever as well.
The area is really dense, too. A lot of high schools. I'm not familiar with C. Springs, but imagine it to be more similar to Annapolis in that respect (as opposed to say the area around WP, which despite relative proximity to NYC, is itself pretty rural). Competition for USNA is certainly tough in the Beltway regions of MD.
