While searching around about the AROTC APFT, I have seen some people saying that they scored over 300, like they would say, "I scored a 337". How does this happen? I thought that the best you could do was a perfect 300, 100 points for each category? Someone help me out?

The Army has an unofficial "extended scale". It can't be used for official scoring, but is helpful to distinguish soldiers who go above and beyond. You have to max (score a 100) in each of the 3 events before the extended scale can be used. Each push-up or sit-up beyond the stated max is worth a point, as is each 6-second decrease in run time.

Here is a link with a calculator to figure extended scale scores

Army ROTC DS got a 342 on 1st APFT (second day of school freshman year to contract)
Three weeks later (after working out with the RC team daily) he took his official one for the Battalion and got a 370 (98-104-11:16).

a couple of notes:
1.) "big Army" stops at 300.
2.) "big Army" might score harder.
3.) The higher your score (plus grades of course) the more likelihood for summer opportunities (at least that was what it was before). Son's scores got him on the RC team as an MS1.
4.) body type makes a difference. son began working on improving his APFT scores as soon as he got his scholarship. You cant just show up.

The Battalion may use the extended scale for calculating their Battalion OML.

As far as the National OML for the purpose of accession and branching, they stop at 300.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking!

... for any of the lurkers out there, the extended scale can be used for things such as assigning slots to various summer training opportunities such as: Air Assault, Mountain Warfare, Airborne Schools, CULP, CTLT, etc.
