kinda off topic but funny

I was polite, I come from a non military type town and as a result I have had to explain to a lot of people what West Point is. I have no problem with it, but I just thought that it was a bit funny.

Hahaha that's hilarious, you should post that on the CC forums. They have a say it ain't so in the parents section, very funny.

It's funny you say this because my husband was flying home last night and had a very similar encounter. He was talking with the person next to him on the plane and mentioned that his son wanted to go to the Air Force Academy. The lady then asked, "Oh, so is he going to do ROTC there?"

He tried to give an explanation of what the Air Force Academy was, but finally ended up saying "It's kind of like West Point for the Air Force!"

Edited to add:

My son will be attending SLS at West Point this summer. I was emailing a friend about it (who conveniently happens to live in New Jersey) and told her that he'd been accepted. She then asked if this was the West Point Military Academy near her or a different one near us in Wisconsin!! (Yeah, he's going to West Point - West!).

hahaha! I live in New Jersey as well, actually I was up at West Point last Monday and Tuesday

At least your peers know what the academies are. Here in Los Angeles, CA... I get empty looks when I say West Point or Annapolis. Well when I say Annapolis, they say "great movie."

If people say "great movie" when they hear "Annapolis"....I would seriously question their tastes.

Here’s another one. Yesterday I was wearing one of my son’s USMA PT jackets that he gave me while he was home on Christmas Break. Embroidered on the left side is USMA with our last name and his graduation year. I was entering my work place and was stopped and asked what USMA stood for. The individuals pronunciation was US (as in us and them) MA (as in short for mother). Ordinarily, I would have explained what USMA meant and carried on. However, I work on an Air Force Base and the person that asked me is a retired Air Force Major. It caught me a little off guard

Perhaps you were being taken for a ride? MAJ doesn't know what USMA is? Was he smiling when you left?

Things that Make you say Hmmmmm...

As a South Carolina Grad I always say to Clemson folks (our archrivals) "Never heard of it."

I was talking to a classmate of mine about the Academy. She was really acting like she knew a lot about the Academies and so I was like ok at least she knows what I am talking about.

Me: "I am trying to go to the Naval Academy."
Her: "That is so cool!! Which Naval Academy??"

I don't think he was taken me for a ride, I've known this guy for awhile and we work together on projects from time to time. Our kids graduated together and he knew my son was at West Point. I think he may have had one of those moments. It will be fun to dog him about it the next time I see him.

seriously though, you wouldn't believe how many cities are named west point...there's one in Virginia, Mississippi, Nebraska, and Georgia as well and possibly one in Maryland too, so you never know...

yeh the other day at school, heres how me and my friends conversation went.

"why are you trying so hard in school"
"I wanna get accepted to the naval academy"
"Dont they accept everyone?"
"No..."
