Soldiers at USNA/NAPS Class of 2019

I am currently an active duty soldier applying to the USNA. My application is completed and I'm just waiting on nomination status. I have looked everywhere and there is next to no information on soldiers applying to the USNA (in comparison to Sailors and Marines). I imagine what I am doing is fairly uncommon and had a few questions on the subject.

1. Are soldiers evaluated the same as fleet applicants or are we on the back burner because we are attempting to cross services? I know SECNAV has allocated slots for Sailors and Marines so where do us Army boys fit in?

2. Approx. how many soldiers show up to I-day each year? How common is it for soldiers to apply?

3. Are there any other soldiers on here going through the same process? I.E. having the chain of command fill out Navy forms/evaluations.

Any and all feedback is appreciated. Hopefully if there are other Army enlisted, they will come across this and get answers that don't seem to be anywhere else

I would suspect you are probably in a category of being the only guy. I am sure a Soldier has tried this at some point. There is a Chief in admissions who serves as the fleet coordinator for enlisted members. Look him up on the admissions page and contact him. He will be your best POC for information and guide you through this process. Good luck.

Only guy, I figured as much! What I'm doing seems almost unheard of as far as I can tell. Some joes in my unit call me a traitor for attempting the Green-to-Blue switch. All in good fun of course... Thanks for the information and timely reply!

I would second getting in touch with the Fleet Admissions Counselor. You would be evaluated the same way -- remember USNA is an academic institution and looking for leaders! Your academic ability would be evaluated like any other enlisted candidate. I suspect your military performance would be evaluated in a similar fashion -- how are you at being a Soldier? How do you perform in your job? Are you a hard-charger? Do you have leadership skills (time management skills/prioritization skills) or the potential to develop them? What does your Commander think about you? Bottom line is your enlisted career will speak for itself. I do not think anyone would think less of you or put you on the "back burner" simply because you are a Soldier. Not sure if you have been or might be asked why you wanted to switch over?

I have spoken with the Chief at admissions and it has been very helpful. He had assured me that I will be evaluated as a fleet applicant and by the looks of my application I am a competitive candidate! As far as being a soldier goes, I am a Specialist (E-4) at 19 years old and have a letter of recommendation from my Battalion Commander (LTC O-5). I also graduated my 24-week AIT course on the dean's list and just recently earned my first AAM (Army Achievement Medal) for quote: "consistently performing above my rank".

That being said I only completed trigonometry in high school (no calculus or pre-cal) and IB Physics (no chemistry which I heard was a big deal to not take) with a 30 on the ACT. 3.75 GPA. Does it seem I could pose an academic risk?

No way man those stats are great, you would be competitive even without your military service ( a huge added bonus to you as well)! Just curious what made you decide USNA?

That is good to know! After working on Naval bases and in joint units I decided I wanted to make the switch. Working with an intelligent branch that travels the world and possesses universal/maritime capabilities is about as good as it gets. I don't know if you're military or not but if any of those things sound appealing to you, you are making the right choice as a USNA hopeful. Take it from someone who was stationed in the hot dirty desert for a long time. Just my two cents. Good luck with your application USNAhopeful19!

Theres been Marines who applied to West Point. I never saw any issue with it. Your commander shouldn't have any issue getting a commanders endorsement for any service academy

Edward, those are great stats. Only having Trig could hurt as the SAs like to see a minimum of pre-calc. The great part is with your age, you can still attend the prep school for a year. This is a great option for anyone who is offered it. In your case this would give you a year of academic prep and a year of transitioning from the Army way to the Navy way. As with your enlisted time, the prep school year counts towards years of active duty for retirement.

I appreciate everyone's information/advice, now (like most of you i'm assuming) it is just a matter of playing the waiting game.
