When do you leave for the Academy when appointed?

I am in the L.E.A.D program, currently enlisted in the Air Force, having served almost 4 years active duty. I have not been appointed yet, fingers crossed, but am wondering when would I have to leave for the academy if the class of 2019 doesn't start until late June 2015? Please and thanks in advance

I'd think it works the same way it did for my DD. You'll get sent orders and an option to have them fly you out or you can make your own plans. The orders will have the date and time when you report. You can probably asked your admissions counselor to clarify how it works for people in the LEAD program. They've done this a few times, so I suspect they have it pretty well figured out. :)

I asked my liaison but the answer wasn't too straight forward, when did your DD report to the academy?

Everyone reports on the same day (so that's 25June for you.) Your orders will have your Squadron on it -- my DD was in Barbarians -- and the report time. The exception is if they want to spend a little extra time because of a medical waiver (which DD had.) So she reported at 0730 with the Aggressors.

They'll have everyone line up and you have checkpoints to stop at as you move forward -- paperwork, backpacks, etc. As you get to the front of the line, they take a group & you get to hear a short speech from Gen Johnson (or a representative.) Then you go into the AOG building. When you come out, you literally cross "the bridge" onto the bus and the fun begins.

Ok, that was way more info than you asked for!

Edit - we arrived in Colo Spgs about a week early only to try and acclimate to the altitude. I know of a couple of Basics who were late in reporting because of airline delays. If that happens, just call the point of contact on your orders and you'll be fine.

That was perfect, just the info I needed. Thank you so much!

Do the hotels in CO still require a two night stay like in some other places?

I've never seen a hotel have that requirement during my time in CSprings o_O

I don't believe that's an issue in Colo Spgs. The town is extremely military friendly - especially USAFA friendly. The Academy brings in a lot of money, especially to hotels and restaurants.

Seriously, don't worry about any of this. Once you get an appointment, you will be sent an "Instructions to Appointees 2019" handbook (pdf). Some things included in this handbook:

packing list (what to bring/what not to bring)
contact numbers
what will happen on in-processing day
hair & weight standards
selecting mode of transportation/lodging (there's even an AOG Bed & Breakfast option)
validating out of classes
etc.

Here's the section specific to Active Duty Personnel:
Active duty personnel will out-process through their servicing Military Personnel Element (MPE) Relocation Section. Instructions
will be forwarded from Cadet Personnel to the MPE with processing instructions when they are notified you have accepted an
appointment

I would recommend getting there a few days earlier to get used to the time change and the altitude. Those are the last things you're going to want to deal with during BCT ;)
