Hoping someone can answer this question. I have read that we need to deposit approx $2000 in our Plebe's account for partial payment for uniforms, computer etc....is this amount accurate and when does this need to be done before I Day or after Plebe Summer. Thank you in advance.

As far as I know, unless things are changing this year, you don't need to deposit any money. They will receive an ACE loan to pay for these items and will pay it pack each month out of their Mid pay. I am pretty sure, if your Plebe has scholarships that are awarded directly to him, and not designated for "tuition" s/he can use this to pay down ACE loan and then end up with more money deposited to his account each month, but as far as I know, its not required to bring any money. The only money my 2014 and 2016 Plebes brought was about $50 to use during Plebe summer when they got to go to a baseball game.

Thank you falconchic88 - I just want to make sure we are prepared for any monies out of pocket.

Money is useful for two things during plebe summer- one trip to the mid store to restock on toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc, and the baseball game.

We gave DS $100 (they made a baseball game outing and could buy food) and put money in his NFCU acct (they send the paperwork to open one) and then sent care packages. It was truly more than he needed.

Thank you 2018midmom - My DS has 2 NFCU Accounts one civilian and one active duty. My DS journey to this point has been a roller coaster ride. $100 works for us :)

I actually gave my son a credit card before he left. I'm paying for his siblings education and figured I could afford a couple hundred bucks a month for him. It has come in handy a few times, and this way he doesn't have to touch what goes into his account each month.

You may have seen the $2,000 deposit in reference to West Point. It is used to offset the expenses in the first year at USMA.

We seriously dropped him off with his cell phone and charger and $100. Everything else was provided and we sent care packages with toothpaste, shave stuff, snacks, and addressed stamped envelopes. During plebe year we have given him extra cash and bought necessities when we have visited. They really do not need anything on IDay.

I do think somewhere there was mention of $2000 needed to offset costs, don't know if that was how it was done in the past or for another SA. (I recall reading that somewhere when we were looking into the academy) You can literally drop them off with nothing but the clothes on their backs and they will be fine.

In the old days, plebes were required to make a deposit on I-Day to defray initial costs of uniforms, etc. That is no longer required -- it all comes out of their pay. Some spending money is helpful but isn't required as they will start earning a salary. While the portion they see each month isn't great, it is adequate.

Toiletries provided on I-Day (toothpaste, soap, etc.) will be enough to last for the summer if used reasonably. They give a lot of stuff.

Money/scholarships can be used to pay off parts or all of the ACE loan. Information about this will be provided in the Permit to Report package. This is entirely optional.

Echoing what previous posters have said. Dropped him off on IDay with the clothes on his back, a backpack with some extra running gear, his cell phone and charger, copies of paperwork he submitted with his packet, and his wallet with $50.00 in it. He already had been banking with NFCU, so his account was set up. He purchased renters insurance from USAA when we were visiting in October where he was also approved for a credit card with a very low spending limit for emergency and credit building. A few times throughout Plebe year we have made online deposits to his Yard Card, which comes in handy on the Yard. And of course, it seems we are always slipping him a few bucks here and there.

My son is a plebe this year and the only money he had when he got to I-Day was his graduation money he put into his NFCU accounts. He never once asked or needed money other than when he needed anything from the midstore or for the baseball game.

How does a plebe mark what he wants to go his room and what usna holds onto? Like a phone or shaver/wallet/etc.

You don't. You keep your wallet and optional underwear/toiletries/sports gear. The rest will be collected.

This depends on the company. Some plebes have their entire dobkit tossed in the trash. My son had to throw his entire dobkit away in the trash which included his contacts. This Pissed him off more than anything else about Iday!!!! His sports gear was not needed for plebe summer so his sports gear and golf clubs (because he was going to have so much time to knock off 18 holes LOL) was dropped off at his sponsor's house before iday (we knew our sponsor before hand because it was a family friend). He had a late check in time so thedetailers grabbed his stuff and when we saw him again on Iday he was also stressed about his wallet ...turned out fine, a roommate was a prior and had already checked in and took care of his wallet for him..all good.

The above posters are correct all you need is $100.00. They wont even get to spend it on anything except the baseball game before PPW anyhow. I would NOT send him/her in with anything else though except for his cell phone and charger & copies of paperwork he submitted with his packet. Wear running shoes and have a second pair sent. All spear underwear/toiletries etc should be sent in a care package that gets dropped in the mail on Iday. (and no shaver of plebe summer anyhow).

The bank is open the day before Iday so you can open an account. I wish we had done that online through because the line was long.

this answer as with all answers can change year to year and is company dependent.

My DS has his NFCU account for his pay and a debit account linked to our bank. I make sure he has at least 50 dollars at all times in his debit account. He does not need much money. ...no opportunity to spend it. He orders stuff online sometimes and he eats in DTA with friends.
