ROTC/waitlist

Hi all,

so I recently received an NROTC scholarship and I've been reading through the packets but I'm not sure if I'm reading it right. I got the scholarship to my first choice but somehow how if I don't get into the school, should I accept the scholarship first and send in a waitlist request to other schools? It said there was a deadline to accept it in the "letter attached" but I haven't found that either.

Yes, accept the scholarship. You can't transfer it, if you need to, until you do.

So if I accept the scholarship and don't get in, I can choose to transfer it to a max of 3 other schools?

you can request to transfer it to another school - there is no guarantee

My son received an NROTC scholarship, but his first choice school (a reach school) won't announce acceptances/rejections until April 1. He contacted the battalions at the other schools on his list to tell them about his situation and they informed him about the likelihood of slots being open for transfer. No guarantees, but useful information to have if you're thinking about how to reorder your other schools.

Thanks! That's exactly the same situation I am in right now. I guess I will call and ask them about it too.

My son received a 4 year NROTC scholarship to UPenn last evening. He is also a USNA 2019 hopeful with a current nom waitng to hear. My question is if he does not get into USNA and does not get into Penn, what is the likelyhood that he can transfer the four year to the others on his list should he be accepted to those schools (Nova, Cornell, VA Tech, UVA, Pitt). Because of the Academy, he did not apply early decision to anywhere and only has one acceptance so far at Pitt. I guess the real question is does a four year scholarship ever become dead in the water? HAting the waiting!

I would have him call all of the schools on his list to see where they currently are with the number of scholarships already placed at their school vs. their quota. It will be useful information to have if he needs to apply to transfer his scholarship to another school. Some units fill up more quickly in the scholarship cycle (I would imagine VA Tech to be one of them since it's a SMC), so it could force him onto a wait list and hope somebody relinquishes their scholarship so he can get in. A highly selective school like Cornell would be more likely to have an open spot, since it's so difficult to get into the school. If your son doesn't get into Penn, but gets into Cornell, then I would bet he would have a good chance transferring the scholarship there. There have been cases in the past where every school that a kid had on their original list, to which they gained admissions, had already reached their scholarship capacity. The folks at NROTC headquarters then would start giving out a list of schools (typically in-state public universities) that they could then still transfer their scholarship to, as long as the school would still allow them to be admitted late.

Thanks for the above information..very helpful. Yes I do believe Va tech is prob at quota as that was my son's first choice though Penn was a very close second . Is it true that they assign the first school on the preference list that has an open spot when they award scholarships or do other factors play in here?

Yes, they do go in order down the list by preference and assign the scholarship to the first school that has an available slot.

"Once a board has chosen the hundred or so students it will select, those applications are then sent to a placement department which determines what college/university NROTC unit each scholarship will be assigned to. Obviously, every effort is made to place a student where he/she wants to go, but other factors do come into play. For example, each particular unit (there are roughly 70 total) has a certain "quota" or max number of students that they can accept in a given year. NC State’s quota is usually 30. For us, this means that once 30 students have been placed in our unit and have accepted the scholarship offer, no additional students will be added here. If a 31st student was selected and their application went to placement, they may then be assigned to their number two, three, or four choice of school (again, depending on availability at that school). "
