I've heard mixed stories from people about hearing back from USAFA admissions, is it a notification on the application portal, mail, e-mail, etc.?

Yes.

All of them. Usually you'll see an update in the portal. That's the best official notification. You might get a call from your MOC or whoever nominated you. Once you accept the appointment, you'll receive emails. But number one place to look is the portal and notifications there.

My DS had a notification in his email to check his portal, letter in portal offering then confirmed receiving appointment acceptance. A few days later reg mail letter came. Now awaiting packet of info. :) Christcorp is right, check portal and email notifications. :)

I don't think there's a packet of info (no BFE). All the paperwork is online - that is if it's the same as last year.

Has anyone been first notified of his/her appointment by anything other than the portal this year? I know CC is right (always is!) but so far, I haven't heard anybody mention receiving a call/letter from a Congressman prior to the portal update.

Just trying to figure out if it makes sense to keep breaking into a sweat every time my phone rings! :D Any replies are appreciated. Thanks!

For USAFA, it was via portal for my DD. For USNA, MOC call. So I guess it depends on how the MOC handles appointments once notified.

I was notified of my USNA appointment via snail mail (a letter from my Congressman), but I wasn't sure if I should expect the same with regard to the AFA? I think they post "instant BFE's" in the form of portal updates, so I'm not sure if it's realistic for me to expect to hear from my Representative/Senator before my portal changes.

What if you do not receive an appointment, or they offer acceptance to the prep school; do they email you to check your portal also?

If I remember correctly from last year my son received both and email notification and letter in the mail for Prep offer.
