Has anyone ever heard of a school suspension causing the applicant to not be admitted to west point, even if he/she was fully qualified?

It depends on the reason for the suspension. We have seen many things on this page through the years.

Also, what may have been waived, for lack of another word, in the past may not fly this year.

I have heard over and over that this is a competitive year. I would not give them any reason NOT to select you. As a teacher, I am thinking off the top of my head of the reasons we suspend: mouthing off, fighting, drugs, alcohol, disruption of the learning environment, bullying...I can't see that any of these would be overlooked, but I sure could be wrong.

ulee B:

Any suspension goes before the admissions committee for review/decision for qualification. Yes, a suspension for something minor can get you disqualified. A major incident may not. It depends on many factors. So:
1) don't hide it. If you messed up, you need to own it. If you were suspended and don't put it on your questionnaire, that will get you DQ'd not so much for the offense, but the coverup.
2) don't minimalizing it/push off responsibility. It is your mistake; failing to learn from it by casting blame on others or trying to make it sound as if it was minor when it wasn't doesn't show the growth you need.

Realize that everyone in that room was once that HS kid that did something stupid that could or did get them suspended. Many are parents of a HS kid now that is probably doing the same stupid things. Part of their determination comes down to what you did, how well you and others represent you after the fact, what you learned, and the likelihood that this one time offense signals a future pattern.

We are saying it's case by case. If you tell us more detail about the nature of the suspension, we'll be happy to speculate further.

For the love of god...did you get suspended? What did you do? And what year are you applying? If you want random strangers on the internet to devote time to thoughtful responses, don't make them play the guessing game with what you're after.

I am applying for the class of 2020, I was suspended for 3 days for making a racist remark in my defense from a bully that was tormenting me. The principal said I had brought it to another level so therefore I was punished while the bully was getting away with the crime. I would've been fine with the punishment if I had been the aggrevator. But it still bothers me very much. Also will it affect my receiving of a congressional nomination?

The congressmen will not know about it, unless it's on your transcript. Sounds like a great way to turn a bad experience into a positive when you write an essay about overcoming a difficult time.

JMO, but if the incident happened exactly as you said, I would be in the school superintendent's office with my parents getting ready to fight tooth and nail. I wouldn't let it go on my record while the other guy got off scot-free.
