CVW this weekend..

Heard there was a snow day at USNA today. Is there any chance a CVW would be cancelled due to weather? DH and DS leaving tomorrow evening to begin trip. Personally, I hope he gets to experience at least one class on Friday.

Also, son is planning to wear Khakis, but bringing rain pants in the event of snow. At first thought, he was going to wear his sperrys, but would hiking boots be inappropriate for the yard at this time of year? He does not own winter boots.

Lastly, the parent schedule is vague for Friday. It states meeting admissions staff and a parents brief with a QA session....nothing else is mentioned until 4:30 when the buses return parents to parking. Is there anyone who can elaborate on what Friday will be like and if it would be that informative to stay for the day? I'm thinking of suggesting to my DH to just stay for the briefing on Thursday night then head to family that is 1.5 hours away and return to pick him up on Saturday.

My DH and I are dropping DD off Thursday evening. Staying in the Q until Saturday. If your DH needs some company, I can PM my email and cell number. We are thinking of watching the Patriot League track indoor track meet on Friday. Multi-events begin around noon.

I can't answer the question about whether CVW will be cancelled, but I can tell you about Friday as my son was on a CVW last month.
They have a full day of activities for the parents, which are all optional. I don't remember the exact schedule, but there was an admissions briefing at 9:00 and I think the Midshipman briefing followed at 10:00. We found both of these to be very informative. Following that was a tour of The Yard. They allow for a short a lunch on your own.
After lunch there was a STEM briefing and tour that lasted several hours. The final activity was another admissions forum.
 
Would seriously doubt that it's cancelled. Annapolis is shoveling itself out, it'll be fine. Trust me, if they didn't cancel mine during the 2013 Oct. govt shutdown, yours won't either.

I think boots are appropriate for this time of year and if pants are covering most of them I'd think that that's fine. You will want sneakers.

Unfortunately, DH will most likely only stay for the Thursday briefing and return Saturday morning. We will all have to take a tour over the summer when visiting family.

Would a parent find the Friday briefings to be useful if your child has already received an appointment to USMA? The parent schedule that day looks to be totally geared toward parents of Juniors about the application process and just about getting in to USNA.

We attended this fall & my daughter had a LOA. Much of the briefings were geared to Junior parents but there was a good deal of information about dealing with plebe summer as well as plebe year. We found the "round table discussions" with current midshipmen to be really good - there was 1 midshipmen there to represent each class. The plebe did most of the talking because most of the questions were directed to him, but the upperclassmen had great insight. The tour was also good because we got to see actual classrooms in addition to the "standard" tour.
I would encourage you to attend because it just confirmed what a great opportunity & we did get some tips to help support her during the first year.
 
DS came back from this weekend's CVW. He enjoyed everything about it, except for the extremely cold weather! LOL He said he was surprised at home much more fun and enjoyable the Plebes' lives are than he thought it would be. They all confirmed that their summer basic training was really miserable, but it shows that once you get through that hell that it is not so bad. I'm sure DS was expecting worse, as a result of my DH's sharing his experiences from the early 80's as a Cadet at West Point. He was surprised that there were no classes on Saturdays, that the Plebe Midshipman got to have weekend liberties, that all meals weren't mandatory, etc. He got to spend a little bit of time with his squad leader from NASS. The Midshipman that he was paired with asked him if he was on "Service Academy Forums" since those are the Drags who always bring goodies for them! :) DS said he can really see himself going there. He said he was so glad he had the opportunity to go and would recommended it to anybody who has received an appointment to help in their decision process. He has an overnight visit scheduled at West Point in March and then he needs to decide which appointment he's going to accept. If I were betting, I'd guess he'll choose USNA, but we shall see.
 
My DS has appointment but his schedule is so crazy this Spring we have decided to go up this Friday, spend the night, do a quick campus visit, then drive back to NC late Saturday. (He has church function Sunday morning) Is there anything that is a must see/do during this abbreviated visit? He seems to have already made his choice to attend.
 
Please remind your kiddos that plebe quality of life is truly company dependent. They are seeing the "almost to Herndon" plebes this time of the year and not the frazzled football season plebes. It's a roller coaster unlike any other and they need to know that going in. With that being said mine has never had second thoughts about his decision to seek and accept his appointment.

Yes, the spring PRT is Saturday. Seeing this in the fabulous weather will remind him of the grind that is USNA. A Yard tour is recommended if the weather doesn't prevent them. Spend time in downtown Annapolis (DTA) as that will be almost the entirety of plebe year liberty fun. Go to the museum-it's cool.
 
PRT = Physical Readiness Test. Mids have to do this each semester. Situps in 2 minutes+ pushups in 2 mins + 1.5 mile run.
 
Don't know the exact time but early. If it's less than 20 degrees it will be rescheduled.
 
They will do this over at Farragut field. It will start early unless its cold, then they might push back the start time until its a little warmer or they may postpone until another day. They will go company by company or two companies at a time. Regardless, 30 companies takes awhile to get through. They will probably start early 0600-0700 or so and run until completed. I was an observer for this once and I think we cycled all the companies through in about 6 hours. We would have 2 companies doing the push up/sit up portion and two running, with two in the prep area for push ups/sit ups and two in the prep area for running. Not sure how they are doing things now. Probably be good to spend a few minutes watching to see how stringent they are on the counting of push ups and sit ups.

Mid tells me how stringent they are on form is completely depends on the individual observing. :)
