Seeking an Army ROTC roommate at Point Loma Nazarene University

Hey everyone! Earlier this month I found out I received a 4 year Army ROTC scholarship to Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. I know this is a shot in the dark but are there any other Army ROTC guys going to PLNU? If so, I was hoping to room together with you.

Is there anyone on here that is doing, or has done AROTC at San Diego State? It would be great to hear your input!

Actually though you may be best off contacting HR at cadre and ask for your email to be forwarded to other cadets.
Good luck. Though you should hang out with non ROTC students, it can make life easier if your roommate is a fellow cadet.
 
Definitely recommend contacting the Cadre at school. They can direct you towards other freshman and if they recommend you room with another ROTC student or not. Probably be good to hear some other Cadets perspective on the pros and cons of it. Some recommend it, some do not on this forum. Sort of like when I was at USNA. I never roomed with another basketball player. It is too much time together and you need a break. Also a great way to meet more people.
 
Navy Hoops, that is an interesting point. I am also curious as to what other cadets and cadre recommend as well. Though everyone is different I am curious about the conventional wisdom.

My USNA son also did not room with a fellow team mate (though he is the only one in his company that same year on the same team). His best friends are CO mates (though he of course really likes his team mates). His roommate and him have been thick as thieves and have stuck together since plebe summer. But their sports schedules are the exact opposite so I dont know how much in each others space they are.

My ROTC son though chose to live with a fellow cadet figuring no one would want to room with someone who had to wake up at 4:45 am every morning. This worked out great. To be honest I dont think my ROTC son has had time for to much outside of his ROTC sphere (even though he joined a club sport) though I know many of the ROTC cadets join a fraternity and even live in the fraternity house.
 
The upside? You'll have someone who understands the demands on your time as an MSI, and you don't have to worry about waking up your roommate at 0500 for PT. The downside is that you do limit your circle, one should seek people outside the battalion. Also, it only takes on knucklehead on the floor to keep you up late and make that wakeup that much tougher. For our DS the key was to get off campus and live with other cadets who respected quiet hours.
 
Both my sons were in a Fraternity (The same one) While it was a great way to meet other students outside of ROTC, there was a period of adjustment living with guys that were not on the same schedule. Didn't take long to get in a groove. They both enjoyed having the opportunity to be involved in both traditional school activities as well as ROTC. My son's school did not have a specific area in the dorms for ROTC cadets, many either lived off campus or joined the Greek system, some did the dorms but usually for just the first year.

If you do end up rooming with another cadet, make sure you still try to get involved with activities outside of ROTC, some can even help you with your OML score like leadership roles, public speaking, debate, and others. My younger son became very involved with student government, time management is important but it can be rewarding.
 
If I end up choosing ROTC over an Academy (or I get rejected), I feel like I'd want to room with a regular student there. I think it's great to hang out both with ROTC guys, but you can meet so many more people outside of that.

Not really the same but I saw people in JROTC in highschool just hang out with their classmates there. That's fine, but I like variety. I guess it comes down to personal preference.
 
I understand where you are coming from, TheEvanCat. For some people that makes sense but I dont think it will be a problem for me.
 
I think whether you live with ROTC cadets or not, it's important to do other activities and meet people outside of ROTC. All the cadets that were amazing from my Det participated in many different activities outside of ROTC. Currently, I live with both ROTC and non-ROTC friends. In my immediate room (we have a suite) is all ROTC so we don't have an issue with getting up early. It's also fun mixing 'friend spheres'. Whatever you do with housing, just do something, anything outside of ROTC.

I agree completely with your advice. I plan on being involved in multiple intramural sports and clubs.
