Hi everyone! I was just accepted into the USAFA Summer Seminar and I will be attending session 2! I just had a quick question about whether I should wear contacts or glasses? Which do you think would be better? I know some mornings we will barely have any time to get ready, so would contacts not be the best idea?

Thanks so much!

Son wore his contacts. You will don't do anything dusty or dirty.

Seriously, anything you want to pack go ahead and bring. I was worried about bringing any "extras" but turns out it's not an issue. As long as you don't bring any obviously contraband items of course. You may want to have glasses handy for the morning on Doolie for a Day, because on that morning you have NO time to get ready, but other than that you should be fine. Or you can just tell your cadre you have contacts and let him/her know it may take a bit of extra time on that day.

I had my contacts, you'll be fine. Only time I didn't have time to put them in was during that one Doolie for a day thing. Then once morning PT was done I went back and put them in before breakfast.

Oh, and don't forget your towel like I did. Ended up using that one issued one the entire time. Still have it somewhere.

On no! But didn't you have to do pushups and such on it still? Lol! Idk if you were in session A or B, but Session A was COLD so we all used our towels as blankets in addition to the sleep sack they gave us!

It was wet and I still had to use it, heh. It was session A. I pretty much slept in sweatpants and that nifty windbreaker we got.

LOL! What element were you? Ooh yeah it was SOOO cold during session A at night! Lol I was happy they gave us windbreakers!!!

Just so no one reads this wrong. You bought the windbreakers & sweats with the session fee.

Don't want taxpayers to get upset. ;-)

Lol, yes, good point! Still, it was the best $300 I ever spent! (For the whole thing, not just the windbreakers ;) )
My advice for any 2015 SS attendees-bring your own blankets! The issue you a sleep sack, but depending on the weather, that is not always enough!!

I was down in D5, I liked it.

Another thing to realize is that the cadet in charge of your thing will be pretty big in your impression of the Academy, regardless if it is actually what happens or not. Ours was pretty chill for the most part, I've heard of others who were more hooah. I think if we had a guy who was gonna set us eating at attention or something the entire time, I'd just exclusively be acting on my ROTC scholarships right now.

Yeah, my cadre was super chill, too. To be honest, I would have liked to get yelled at more, just to know how I handle it! Still, they said they took PT easy on us, and it still killed me!!!

Also, will we be able to use our CFA scores from the seminar as official ones? Thanks

Unless they change something this year, you will not. At my session last year we didn't even do the mile on the same day as the other events due to lightning.

You must have been Session A.
Perhaps if the weather holds out though, you may be able to. I think it kind of varies.

Definitely bring your contacts. Glasses just get in the way. I had plenty of time on the Doolie for a day to get ready. Well...plenty is a stretch, but I've been wearing contacts for years, so sticking them in wasn't hard at all for that morning.

However, (since there is always a flip side), it might be a good idea to wear your glasses, just so you can see what life will be like during BCT.

I echo everything Bailey said. I was in the same session she was and it was FREEZING. Bring your blanket and maybe some long underwear. It got to the point where my roommate and I were considering bunking together to share body heat.

And to further echo things said, SS doesn't actually gives you a taste of what BCT is like. At least, I hope not. I think it's more there to familiarize the kids with the Academy itself and to let them see everything. The things we were doing might be closer to what an upperclassman does. A very little bit of PT, classes, eating in Mitchell Hall, etc. The key phrase is laid back.

Totally true. Even though (for me, at least) the PT was difficult, it is nowhere NEAR what a doolie will experience, and we really didn't get yelled at much either. Mostly, we saw the "nice" side of USAFA: friendly cadre, cool professors, interesting lessons and briefings, and oh, yeah, Nutella at EVERY TABLE! Lol! Still, it was a great experience and I learned a lot from it! Congrats again to those of you attending!

The Nutella is still at the tables. A cadet favorite. :)
