Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone knew what where the chances of getting into the academy as a sponsored prep with a 2.4 gpa at NMMI.

I was a NMMI prep last year and I am currently a USMMA Plebe. There are a couple of things to take into consideration with your question here. First, you want to stay away from D's and F's as much as possible. Second, if you failed a class last semester and you are re-taking it for the second time this semester and still having trouble with it, you are going to want to try to get that turned around ASAP. Re-taking a class in itself wont get you thrown out, but if you aren't improving in it the second time around, it wont look too good. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that the academy wants to see that you are improving/advancing academically while at NMMI. To answer your question in short....yes it is POSSIBLE to get in, but there are several different criteria that KP will use in order to evaluate your file.

Now for my advice to you....keep your head in the game, you have half a semester left to make the best of your NMMI grade and show KP just what kind of student they will have on their hands. Use your NSH time wisely, study with the smartest kids in your class and if you have off periods, meet with your teachers as much as you can, this will show them that you are serious about making it to KP. Believe me, I was horrible in math when I first came to NMMI, but I made it work by setting up appointments with my teachers to work on problems, burning the midnight oil, staying on campus while friends went out on the town or up to Ruidoso and getting off facebook/youtube/netflix (yea it takes up more of your time than you think...), etc.......Bottom line is that I made my NMMI calc work grade wise with some very low C's and I am convinced that if they didn't send me to NMMI that I would already be out of KP for my math grades.

Remember, as a sponsored prep, you have a golden ticket into here, your only "job" is to make those grades happen...Focus on your potential, not the minimum of what the academy will accept.

I believe that ALL KP/NMMI sponsored preps are GUARANTEED spots at KP as long as the student passes whatever academic criteria is required, along with character endorsements (no notable bad guy incidents,etc)
Am I making a wrong assumption in my previous sentence ??
 
When did the past USMMA recruited athletes find out if they were appointed to NMMI? Any 2015 HS grads find out, yet? Thanks.
 
Hello, This is my first time posting on this site. My DS is a self prep at NMMI. His advisor states that he has a good shot at getting in to USMMA, yet he(and the rest of his class) just failed the first physics test and 9 week grades were just sent out afterwards. The advisor was contacted as many sponsored and self preps failed and now are in a panic. I was told not to get involved by my DS and he would take care of it. So my question is.. Will one bad test grade delete the last 8 months of preparation? Any words of wisdom or insight would be helpful.Thanks

The biggest question is whether or not the course is being retaken due to a failure from the last semester. If so, then it might not look so great however, if this is a higher level class then I wouldn't be overly concerned about it. This isn't to say that the academy doesn't care about it, rather it is an understanding that it is a more advanced class. Biggest thing is for them all to just keep their head in the game, pull their grades up as much as they can and keep the gpa requirements for admission to KP. The academy will follow your grades all the way to the bitter end to see where students end up, even the preps who are given an appointment early will in some rare cases be rejected later on for getting lazy and completely giving up on grades in the last semester.
 
Is time spent at NMMI like time spent at a community college? and does the time at NMMI keep you on track to graduate within the normal timeframe or does it add time?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes it is like a community college, except a bit more rigorous than many from what I have been told.

A year at a prep school will "prep" you to start your plebe year at the academy. You would have 1 year at the prep school and 4 years at Kings Point.
 
I'd check with USMMA Admissions to verify about the "Guarantee" - I didn't think anything prior to receiving an LOA guaranteed anyone an appointment/slot, and those rules have to be subject to the class sizes, etc. There is certainly nothing in the applicable CFR on that so whose slots would those be - the USMMA Supe's? And I thought in recent years he was using them primarily to ensure diversity in each entering class.
 
I think the official min GPA is 2.2 after the first semester (from any college applicant). But I have heard of a female with a higher GPA who failed Physics. She was not offered an appointment. So it might depend on which class(es) you are having trouble with. I think your prep school recommendations would also be weighted heavily. If you have struggled to fit into the regiment or not shown good leadership traits, that might raise some serious doubts.
 
The NMMI kids here seem to be bright for the most part, but immature. And of course, if you fail physics at NMMI you have no shot here, its not even worth the academy bringing you here
