Hello everybody,

I just wanted to ask if anybody had any idea, particularly a regulation, that details any medical benefits a cadet is eligible for while commissioned but on an educational delay. I would like to know if cadets in this situation are eligible to purchase Tricare benefits for themselves and family, similar to soldiers in the Reserve Component.

Thank you.

Ghaz - Check AR601-25 Google is your friend but here is a link. http://www.apd.army.mil/pdffiles/r601_25.pdf I'm not sure medical insurance coverage is addressed in this regulation for Educational Delay however.

You could also check the regulations references in Appendix A of AR601-25.

My 2LT is on an Educational Delay. As I recall there was no Tricare coverage if you go to a civilian school. Most graduate school programs have insurance available for purchase.

If you are under 26 you might be able to get back/stay on your parents insurance unless excluded for some other reason. I see you have a family so this option might not be available. Check out your Graduate School website - you will likely have to pay for insurance.

Key in AR601-25 is your status. You are not actually a 'serving' reservist when on Educational delay. You are in a control group in the IRR.

Thank you. Yes, I have pored over AR 601-25 multiple times, and was seeing if anybody had information on another reg that directly addressed this. It seems that on an educational delay you really are not "in the military" yet you still maintain rank. Graduate school subsidized healthcare would be a last resort, since I know it is not as inclusive as tricare.
I just think it is strange this is not addressed in the above reg.

I'm not 100%, but I thought Ed delay folks were put in IRR status. If so they are not eligible for Tricare.

AR601-141 may apply "Program members receiving education at a nonmilitary facility in an inactive status described in paragraphs 2–6a and 2–6b, above, are not entitled to any pay, allowances, or educational expenses from the U.S. Army."
