Oakley SI not for service academies

DS (USCGA) tried to sign up for an Oakley SI account and was denied as Oakley SI does not consider cadets and midshipmen to be active duty military.

Honestly, all you can really do is post a link to the manual that says that they're active duty. They can either accept it, or not. And if it's a not a government organization, there's not much you can do in the end.

You essentially get one "but sir..." here. It's an easy mistake.... it only applies to cadets and midshipmen at USCGA, USMA, USNA and USAFA (so not USMMA or ROTC). And you've got to decide how "far" you want to go with this. As soon as you post "What about CGA cadets" you will often get two ignorant responses..... first.... the Coast Guard isn't the military, and second, cadets aren't active duty. Both are wrong and both responses will make you want to respond.

And this won't be the last time. Each year you will dread trying to take advantage of any offers, such as the free Veterans Day lunches.... because at some point you'll get a "Coast Guard isn't military" reply and your blood will boil. It happens. Ha!

Quote the policy, maybe they'll agree, maybe they won't. If they don't.... buy somewhere else, but don't make a campaign out of it. I'm not sure how much a cadet or midshipman really needs an Oakley SI account either way.
 
Interesting. My son (AROTC) had no issue setting up an SI Account a couple years ago. Maybe it's a Coast Guard thing?
 
It depends on what you use to set up the account. Army ROTC cadets have an AKO email address just like every active duty or otherwise "real" army person. USCGA cadets may have a different email domain from active coast guard members or it could be misperception of the coast guard, which I doubt because of Oakley's experience with the military and the fact that I also believe law enforcement and firefighters have access to SI; a buddy who joined the local police department right out of high school has an SI account.
 
If ROTC kids are able to set them up (and ROTC cadets and midshipmen are not active duty), CGA cadets SHOULD be able to set them up too. Perheps it needs a .mil address? Unless anything has changed, CGA emails were .edu.
 
I wish I had stocked up when I had the chance. Years ago, you could buy Oakeley sunglasses in Midtown Manhattan on every corner of every intersection of Fifth Avenue between the Plaza Hotel and 42nd Street. The vendors were furtive Senegalese who hawked their wares on flimsy display tables which, at a warning by a confederate, could be collapsed and stowed in black plastic bags for rapid redeployment.

$10 apiece and 3 for $20. You could also get a special export Rollex for $15 to $20, depending on your negotiating acumen.

I believe you do have to have a .mil address in order to set up an account.

The Oakley Military and Government Sales program is only available to the following US personnel types that have an active Government or Military ID, these include:
  • Active Duty Military personnel
  • Military Reserve personnel
  • Sworn Federal & Local Law Enforcement Officers
  • Fire Department personnel
  • Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel
  • Military retirees that have valid Government Email addresses or valid retired military ID card
  • Veterans with valid Government email address (excludes employees of Veteran Affairs)
 
I find that last one interesting. I assume they mean "veterans employed by the federal government" because I'm not sure how I could get a government email address any other way..... and yet employees of the VA can't get that? So federal employees of the Dept. of Housing and Urban Development can..... but someone from the VA can't...... strange..... and pretty random.
 
It would appear that the CSR at Oakley SI that initially denied the account and the CSR (via telephone) that confirmed the denial require some further training. The Oakley SI CSR said they were only eligible after graduation and that applied to all Service Academies, not just USCGA.

A few of us posted to the Oakley SI FB page and it now says that cadets and mids are eligible for membership.

FYI - I just signed up as a veteran and do not have a .gov or .mil email address. Very quick and easy.......
