Seems early to me but we have been advised (by our daughter's sponsor family) to make hotel reservations for her graduation 2 years in advance. Would anyone know the date of graduation for the class of 2017?

In reviewing the academic calendar, it appears that graduation is the first Thursday in June. For 2017 then, would Graduation Day be June 1st, 2017? Thanks.

Usually it is the Wednesday after Memorial Day. This year it moved to Thursday so the government employees don't have to work on the holiday. 2016 is on June 2nd officially approved only as of December, 2014. 2017 is tentatively June 1st, 2017.

Many do book years ahead. We are just now looking for 2016 and there are still homes available. Hotels won't book more than a year ahead.

Many homes will book for 'graduation week' so if it moves, you're still good.

W hat are you referring to when you mentioned "homes available". Is there a need to rent homes? Are there not enough hotels in the Springs? If this is the case, where does one find a home for rent?

There are many hotel rooms in the Springs. Many people for graduation will rent a house that can accommodate entire families. They then also have parties at the home which is much more convenient than a hotel or meeting at a restaurant.
All accommodations raise their prices during graduation week. Homes with five bedrooms can go for $3000 to $4000 for a week. However if you bought five hotel rooms for the week you would spend for more than that.

You can look for homes on VRBO or home away for example.

That sounds like a good idea. You mention VRBO? is that a database? same question for "home away". Thanks

We placed a deposit on a home for 2016 graduation last fall when the unapproved calendar listed graduation as May 26, 2016. When the calendar was approved last month, the owners just switched our week to cover the June 2 date. We found the property on VRBO at the upper end of the price range USAFAmom2016 described. Awesome location off of Briargate and the back yard has an unobstructed view of the USAFA airfield which should be good for watching the Thunderbirds practice for the ceremony.

In the event that relatives don't plan far enough ahead and have to reserve a hotel room with in a couple of months of 2017 graduation date is this a huge problem? Certainly hotels can be found in south Denver right?

There are plenty of hotels BEFORE you have to go all the way out to Denver. If COS is full you can always go and search Monument Co first, it's just north on I-25 maybe 15 minutes to the North Gate. If no luck there there is Castle Rock would be you next biggest chance about 30 minutes to the North Gate. And if you're still out of luck then start looking South Denver.

I would assume that Parent's Weekend is a lot worse than graduation, right?

Not really worse. For PW there are 4000 families descending on COS. For graduation there are 1000 families plus aunts, uncles, grandparents, etc.... We found it about the same. Always reserve early to get the best choice for your family.

For graduation we rented a 3BR 3BAhouse in Briargate right across Hwy 25 from the North gate, literally three minutes from the entrance to USAFA. The owner is a USAFA grad who keeps this house as a vacation home and rents it out for PW and graduations only. The cost was half of what most houses go for during PW. I think he is booked for '15 and '16 graduations already but if you're interested for graduation '17 send me a PM and I'll get you his email. I am not sure how far out he is booked, but I know we booked it when our son was a Doolie. Don't worry about not knowing the exact dates as he will just book it for graduation week no matter when the dates fall. You will want to rent it for the full week because of all the events during that week you will not want to miss.

The benefits of renting a house are huge. We had room for everyone to gather. We had some relatives who are USAFA grads and of course grandparents who got hotel rooms to sleep, but used the house as a base of operations during the week. We had cookouts and gatherings there and it was wonderful. We also had a great view of the Thunderbirds rehearsal show on Tuesday. The garage was a great place for our son (and a couple of his squadron buddies) to move stuff out of their rooms early so that all they had to do was drop off their keys for the dorms after the graduation ceremony and check out.

As per Rose Nikovits, the Parent Liaison:
It is tentatively scheduled for 1 Jun 2017. It won't be official until the Academic calendar is approved (Dec 2016 timeframe). As soon as it is approved I send out word to the parent clubs. You can also keep checking the graduation website page link below.

BTW: I also reserved a hotel for the week of graduation, still unsure if we may do a home rental, if so, we'll cancel the hotel.
