USNA Spondylolisthesis Waiver Denial

My son is high school class of 2015. He received an official USNA "Conditional Offer of Appointment" a few weeks ago...subject to a medical review of his Grade 2 Spondylolisthesis condition. We provided overwhelming medical documentation that he is 100% fit to perform military service. The spondy was diagnosed in 8/2011. He played, started and excelled as an OL in high school (Texas 6A level) for the last 3 years without any pain or consequence of the condition....so, he has been "stable" and pain-free for 3+ years.

Regardless of the medical evidence and his whole med case file, his med waiver was denied because it is a Level 2 (out of 5 levels)...a Level 1 would likely have gotten a waiver approval. He is appealing the decision. His spondy grade is a very low-level 2 (very close to a 1), but nonetheless a 2. We believe the USNA Dr. did not review his whole file, but merely DQ'd it because it is a 2..."by the book"! So, we are hopeful that an appeal might compel a 2nd look with a more comprehensive evaluation with compensating factors.

Is this wishful thinking or does he have a chance for a successful appeal?

Our son recieved a USMA waiver for spondylolysis (this year). Send me a PM if you'd like to ask any questions. I'll be glad to share our experiences.

That would be great....but, I'm still trying to figure out how to use PM....can you help with that?

There are two easy ways to send a private message. The first way is to click on the members name in the blue box next to their message. The information box for that member will have a selection for "start a conversation", click on that and start your message. Another way is to click at the top right of the page on "Private Conversation Inbox". On the next page, click on the blue box "start a private conversation". On the next page, begin typing the name of the user you wish to message, and it will automatically give you possible selections. You can also just "hover" over the Private Conversation Inbox at the top and then select "start a private message" at the bottom. Hope this helps!

You need to have a certain amount of post in order to send a PM. I'm unsure what that number is though.

My DS is DQd for Spondylolysis--what did you do to get the waiver? I don't have enough posts to PM:)

The short answer is this. We researched as much as we could on our own about the injury and treatments. Then we contacted as many people as we could find including doctors that performed repair surgery (there are not many of these) and found contacts to gain an understanding of the waiver process (most of which is not published or mentioned on forums). We also located and engaged an experienced advisor who showed us how to avoid simple mistakes, anticipate questions/concerns, and prepare an efficient package for review.

There is much more to all this which I'll be glad to share. I'd prefer not to post my phone number so respond a few times here and you should be able to PM.

Did DoDMERB reverse the DQ or did USMA grant the waiver? Did your DoDMERB portal ever show that a waiver was requested or did you not find out until it was finalized?

USMA granted the waiver. The DoDMERB site showed a request was submitted for AROTC but it did not show the USMA request. His West Point did eventually show the waiver request, but he was told a few days earlier.
