Can I send in my US passport as proof of citizenship to the Academy? The paper says you may send "U.S passport if issued within the past two years - DO NOT send a valid U.S. Passport through the mail.

I was issued my passport a year ago. The above statement makes no sense to me.
 
I interpret that to mean you have to deliver it in person if you are using a passport as one of the required documents. :mad2: Not exactly convenient, I know. Maybe you could use a birth certificate instead? If I remember right, the directions in the BFE listed a bunch of acceptable documents.

(Someone please feel free to correct me on this if I am wrong.)
 
I would call admissions to check, but I think you can send a colored copy of your US passport
 
Yes you can send a copy of your passport. Have it notarized which certifies that it is indeed a copy of the original. Now, having said that, DanD is correct...call admissions and double check. Or...you can do what my DD did. Send the birth certificate, certified mail, with a SASE so that it can be returned. We had the birth certificate back in less than 2 weeks. No questions there.

I have the same problem.

Solution: Get a notarized copy and mail that copy.
 
@wallacen - if you were born in the USA you can just send an original copy of your birth certificate (meaning a copy from the state, not a photocopy). I'm assuming you have the list of acceptable documents but listing below again just as FYI.

"Any one of the following can serve as proof of citizenship. Only originals, original copies from the issuing authority, notarized copies, or a certified true copy will be accepted. If a passport is going to be used, please send a notarized copy rather than the original.

– United States Birth Certificate
– United States Passport (if issued within the last two years)
– Certificate of Naturalization
– Certificate of Citizenship
– Consular Report of Birth Abroad"
 
In Virginia, notaries are not permitted to notarize copies of birth/death/marriage certificates (but can notarize a passport copy); we learned that this is true in a number of states. That came as a surprise! Fortunately, we have a District of Columbia notary in my office who was able to notarize a copy of DS's birth certificate since his passport is more than two years old.
 
Some countries required new passport if the passport will expire in less than 6 months of the visit. travel.state.gov warned to get a new passport ASAP.....
 
If someone doesn't have any other option, "official" birth certificates can be ordered from the Vital Records office (or equivalent) in every State. From a quick check, you can do it on-line either through a State run web-site or via VitalCheck (www.vitalchek.com). Response time is supposed to be 2 weeks or so. Note that it can be expensive in some locations....
