Just curious, how many candidates are usually picked up off the wait list? I know it varies from class to class based on how many appointments are turned down, but if anyone knows the stats or has a good idea let me know :) thanks!

I believe you just answered your own question. Only Admissions knows for sure, and to my knowledge they don't publish that information.

DS made it to the wait list last year before getting TWE in May. He was told that 100-125 were on the waitlist and we have no idea how many eventually made it in. I don't recall any positive postings on this forum indicating acceptance from the waitlist, however. I am sure there were some. He is now at USAFA prepping for recognition which begins in 11 days.

It varies from year to year and depends on actual yield vs. planned yield. Obviously, if fewer people accept than expected, some on the WL will be offered appointments. The converse is also true.

Has anyone received word they have been placed on the waitlist at this point? Why are we worrying about the waitlist when all of the appointments and/or TWEs haven't gone out?

Our DS was told by his BGO that he has been put on the wait list. Hopefully somewhere high up on that list!
No way to tell but he's proud that he's still in it and that Admissions see him as someone they'd want-even if an alternate.

When he told me today I reminded him of what he's capable off and what he's done so far in his life.
He's made a difference like so so many other applicants and even if not accepted(or if you got a TWE), that difference matters-peoples lives have been changed, enhanced, enriched, given hope, seen excellence and the drive to succeed and I'm so proud of him and ALL the other applicants to all the SA's, XRotc's, OCs, PLC, etc, etc, that show with their lives what it means to really put others before self.
We are truly blessed to have such young, spirited people to carry the torch of freedom into the future.

Good luck to all waiting. We wait with you.

Was it National Wait List he was told? I believe that is different. The NWL or the National Pool is where they candidates with noms, but didn't win their slate go. The 150 appointments have to come from that. True??

Yeah. TWEs and BFEs are still not done being distributed. I'm pretty sure that's what admissions is focusing on; getting everyone to know their status by the April 15 deadline.

He was told he'd be getting a letter indicating he's on the USNA wait list which is not the National Pool.

He was also told no appointments "have" to come from the wait list. From what I've read, some years none do and some years up to 50 do. I think 39 did last year or year before.

If not appointed from that list, I believe he gets a TWE.

My understanding as well MJP. If I remember correctly there were none from last year and around 40 from the year before. Be curious to see how it plays out this year. And I would imagine this could be a long wait for a final verdict. I hope it works out in favor of your DS!

Thanks Hoops!
He's got Plan B almost decided so we'll be putting deposits down next couple weeks to be sure that gets locked up.

So we continue the wait.

This news makes me sad; I was pulling for my fellow Californian. I'll still be rooting for your DS and a BFE in your mailbox.

A letter to candidates being placed on the wait list is being sent out and probably will be received sometime next week. I do not want to speculate too much, but this action sounds like almost all offers of appointment have been made and it is a "wait and see" situation, as appointees respond between now and May 1st on their acceptance/declination. Once, USNA knows the number of appointees who declined, they then can determine how many candidates can come off the wait list and can be offered an appointment. Basically, if you are placed on the wait list, you won't here until at least a few weeks into May. I also believe that almost candidates are likely to know their status by April 15 (wait list or not), as previously mentioned many times.

Thanks d22! We are hoping for other CA applicants as well-there is another with an LOA at DS's school waiting on medical waivers....hoping for him as well.

Thanks for that info '08 as opening the mailbox and seeing a TWE would be hard. At least I know what it might say.

I thought someone last week said that by law 150 have to come from the NWL and several BGOs agreed???

Edited to add that I think the 150 was from the NWL which is obviously different than the "wait list".

DS received an email from his RD today congratulating him on being placed on the wait list and that the actual letter will be going out by tomorrow. So this is neither good news nor bad news (at the moment) and he said he will just wait it out to see what happens. Plan B is secured so no worries there...at least now we can have a wonderful Easter weekend.

Do you mind sharing some of your DS resume? If not that's totally fine!

The term National Wait List is not really a term used by USNA. There is the National Pool, which consists of those who had MOC and/or Pres noms but didn't receive an appointment from that source. 150 appointments come from that.

The Wait List is a list of candidates who were very close to being offered appointments but, as with civilian schools, instead ended up waitlisted. Whether some or even any of those on the Wait List will be offered appointments depends entirely on true yield vs. expected yield. Typically, people don't hear until late May or even into early June. If you are waitlisted, definitely firm up your alternate Plan A and then hope for the best.

even with a MOC nomination and a Pres Nomination...you can still end up on the wait list and not in the National Pool--just happened to my DS.

How do you know your son wasn't in the National Pool? That's where the WL candidates typically come from.

To be clear, the National Pool is for folks with noms who aren't slotted to their nominating source. Some of those receive appointments and are slotted to SecNav. Some receive TWEs. A small number are waitlisted.
