Friday I received an e-mail notifying me that I had not been selected for an appointment to USAFA or the Prep School.

If I attend the Merchant Marine Academy next year (where I have been accepted), can I apply to USAFA again next year? Will my chances of being appointed increase?

I really want to be an officer in the USAF.

Thank You.

You should speak with someone at The Merchant Marine Academy (or post on their section here) I'm pretty sure you can cross commission to USAF when you graduate from there. I recently heard a presentation about it, was a very interesting school, but limited majors.

Besides the fact you don't want to be a sailor, do you REALLY want to go through TWO Plebe years?

Thank You Usafamom2016! Upon graduation from Kings Point you can become an active duty officer in any of the Armed Forces branches.

Spud, from what I know about Plebe year (which is probably much less than you), I think that would be a tough decision but since I really would like to go to USAFA, I think I would go through it twice.

Kind of off topic, but I have a friend who wanted to go to USAFA, but ended up at USMMA instead. I'm not going to lie... It looks pretty awesome. He has already sailed around the world during his "sea year" and puts photos up of his experience all the time, and I'm amazed at the travel opportunities he has. While I love it here, I think you would find that you will learn to love the family/opportunities at USMMA.

It is my understanding that you can cross-commission, but there's no guarantee you will have a slot to cross commission into. I don't think it's all that common.
I also believe that AF is actually the most difficult to cross commission into. Learning to sail doesn't translate well into what the AF does.

An ALO should probably weigh in here. My comment is based on what I've read on these forums over that last couple of years, so I could be (excuse the pun) all wet.

I guess I would ask myself what is my objective or end goal. Is it to be an Air Force officer, or is it just to go to the the USAFA. There are plenty of programs in civilian universities that would put you in as an officer, I'd say do ROTC. Same for USNA and USMA. USCGA is a little different since they don't offer ROTC, so you'll have pay for college.

If you got accepted to the USMMA.....I'd go there! Great Career and you'll be happier in the end.
