Army Athletics

That press conference was pretty inconclusive… how will CBS or ESPN introduce the Army teams?

That "Army West Point" combination is stupid. For athletics, "Army" and "West Point"are interchangeable, of course, but all together? It's an abomination only Nike could conjure up.

Is that going to help us beat "Navy Annapolis?"

Agreed. It makes sense on paper but when it's actually used it's awkward. At least the logo makes sense and is attractive. The "new" lettering looks just like the old one used on football uniforms (when we switched to the new Nike uniforms) but I suppose it totally removed the slanted "Army" font used for everything else.

I have not seen one person who likes the new name. I wonder if that will change anything.

I don't care for the new logo. A sword through the head? really? It lacks depth. Its too simple.

I hope they didn't pay too much for this

If I were an athletic director I would be tempted to rebrand/new logo every couple of years. Fans and alumni will be tempted to buy new clothing with the new logos and the school has a nice pay day. I think being called the cadets is actually better than being called the black knights. I like going "old school".

I love the logo...I really like the symbolism in every piece of it. I admit it: I cried during the explanation.

I think the logo is solid. It's not much of a deviation from the helmet and sword that's on the crest, but it has a more athletic look to it. I think it's an improvement from the previous Black Knight. The name is what gets me. It's similar to saying the "Blue Devils Duke" won the national championship.

I understand what they are attempting to do from discussing the USMA with the common person. They often don't make the connection until you say, "West Point." I wear an USMA shirt all the time and I've been asked what part of the Marines it is and even if it is a new MMA outfit.

That being said, putting all three words together is awkward as hell.

I can handle the logo, though think the sword could have been positioned differently. Like the new (old) font & colors.

Really dislike the cumbersome name thing.

And does "cadets" really represent big army any better than "Black Knights"? I think not.

Big Army? Well, first, to me, it presents the cadets because that's who USMA is about. It's not big Army. Yes big Army benefits from USMA and yes big Army cheers for Army (I think at least). At the end of the day, this is a college team and the players are cadets.

It does seem to clear up that "West Point" is associated with the Army by putting every word possible on there. HAHA!

I see your point. But was mainly responding to the idea that somehow the black knights did not resonate with the broader army.

Myself, I believe the decision was primarily to move to a gender neutral (Knights were mostly male), non-crusader image logo.

But I'm OK with the new logo, and think it will be clearer on uniforms.

Years ago my sister the graphics artist told me about the "Logo test". Print your logo on a 8.5x11 sheet of paper. Put it on a wall, and then look at it from 100' away. Anything that is not clear from that distance should be dropped. And strong logos are just as clear that far away as up close.

Which leads to simple color schemes, and clear contrasting areas. And not much fine detail. New logo meets that test. Old logo not so much. (The flying A did, though) Also why the USMA crest and class crests are not good for Logo usage.

I still like my black hat with embroidered USMA crest, and "West Point" underneath it the best, though.

It's more like saying "Duke Durham," unfortunately. The combination of the two pronouns makes no sense to me and I'm disappointed with the change. It seems that Army Athletics - rather, Army West Point Athletics, I apologize - sort of sold itself out to Nike on the name change in the first place. Maybe it's my knee jerk reaction to a change in a name that has existed throughout my life, but I can't really see myself genuinely loving the name Army West Point.

Nonetheless, we need to embrace the new changes as they are, because that's the way it will be and the way that the country views the Academy from an athletic standpoint, which is the way that many relate to it.

Acting negatively to it (which I'm guilty of) will only tarnish the image of the Academy.

Be curious to see how long this brand sticks around. What was it about 5 years ago they made a huge push to use West Point instead of USMA?

Spoken like a good future yes-man.
What I'm saying is that none of us are the Supe, or athletic director, so unfortunately it's above our pay grade. If LTG Caslen asked me about it, I would tell him my thoughts.
