Is it true that you can be in Air Force ROTC but when you graduate you are not accepted as an officer in the Air Force? I talked to an Air Force Recruiter and he said that about 20% of people that are in ROTC actually are accepted into the military. Is this true or is he just trying to get me not try for ROTC and enlist? I've seen everywhere that when you graduate you are commissioned as an officer but his statement contradicts it. Thanks

You're misinterpreting his statements to an extent. I don't know what the exact numbers are, especially for AFROTC, but I bet he's factoring in the fact that AF cadets must be selected to go to Field Training and continue on as POC's. In addition to that, there's normal attrition of cadets prior to, and following, that point. Once again, I can't tell you what the numbers are, but "only X% of AFROTC cadets make it through ROTC and into the military" is much different than completing the program and not offered a commission. On the other hand, if you're looking to commission you shouldn't be talking to the local recruiting station trying to get folks to enlist. Two different ball games

Go find a detachment that you like and talk to the cadre there. They do their own recruiting and they will give you much better information. The majority of cadets that don't make it to being an officer are cut out of their own choice. If you stick with it, show dedication, and work towards your grades you'll most likely make it. One statistic that was interesting to me was that only about 2% of all freshmen make it to being a pilot.

So what I'm getting is that if you do everything good and are an "over-achiever" , follow through and not drop out you should be all set?

Usually that's how contracts work. If you hold up your end of the bargain, you have a really good shot at the Air Force holding up theirs.

Make it simple.

Get selected for Summer Field Training as a sophomore. Graduate from SFT. Keep your nose clean until graduation.; YOU WILL GO ADAF!

Now the recruiter is actually correct. The attrition rate for AFROTC is@75%, just like A/NROTC.

This is going to sound mean, rude, condescending, etc. A recruiters job is not to get kids to go SA/ROTC or OCS. Their job is to get you to enlist. Their reviews are based on making recruiting quotas. Talk to an ALO or a PMS at an AFROTC unit before you sign anything.

JMPO, the recruiter sold you a line of BS! Is it not guaranteed as an AFROTC cadet? Yes. Do you have a higher chance of commissioning than going enlisted? Yes!
~ Want to fly than you are messing with your future. There is an age limit.

I totally understand why the recruiter is doing what he is doing. It's his job to get people to enlist. When I told him that I wanted to go to a Federal Service Academy, he was like "No way you'll make it. I don't see anyone from this school making it there". Funny, but he didn't know that last year a girl from my school went to West Point and the year before that a girl went to USCGA.

When you talk about Summer Field training as a sophomore, do you mean in college? I'm 99% sure you talking about college already but I just want to make sure.

What does ADAF stand for? JMPO?

OK, just my pet peeve right now, but I have to ask why do you keep saying Federal Service Academy?

Recruiters don't know because their job is not to recruit for the SA or ROTC.
~ USAFA has ALOs. You fill out the PCQ and if you qualify they will assign an ALO
~~ Your GC at your HS should know the name of your ALO
~ AFROTC will require you to interview with an officer at a detachment located at a university.

That is what I meant they dont know this path.

Yes, SFT is college.

On the community feedback forum there is an acronym thread.

ADAF = Active Duty Air Force.
JMPO = Just my personal opinion.

OBTW, I am going to assume you don't know what ALO and PMS means
ALO= Air Liason Officer (USAFA)
PMS = Professor of Military Science (AFROTC)

Oh, OBTW = Oh By the way.

What is the proper thing to say instead of Federal Service Academy? Just Academy?

Thanks for telling me what the acronyms mean

Most just say SA....Service Academy

I am not trying to be mean or rude. I just have never heard them being called Federal.

Just curious why you kept saying it that way.

You're not sounding mean or rude. I just called them that cause I heard that somewhere. Thanks for giving me the tip

If you sign the contract the beginning of your junior year, and fulfill your requirements, you should be commissioned. Last year was unusual in that they gave the option to 2014 college AFROTC graduates the chance to opt out of their commitment. This was one of many budget driven changes last and leadership has said they won't continue this. It is too damaging to the Air Force.
