Advice for active duty cadet?

My DS just received his appointment, he is active duty, but only 19 and been enlisted for a year & 9 months. This process has been a whirlwind for him, had no intention of applying but was approached by his command to apply, which he decided to do and barely got the application in by the deadline. He didn't realize it was an option for active duty. He seems to be a bit overwhelmed right now, we even thought he might be considering declining but thank goodness he has accepted. So, I am looking for any advice, any active duty experience?
 
He'll do fine. Most of the things that will be shock to the system of high school kids will barely ruffle his feathers. It'll seem like old hat.
 
Thank you for your response, I think he'll be fine once he's there it's more the getting there part, packing up again to relocate, I know they are not allowed cars so we will have to get his truck back home etc, ugh. It will all be worth it but a lot to think about & get done in a couple months.
 
Honestly, have him sell his truck unless he's desperately in love with it. He'll want something newer and cooler in a few years anyway when he's allowed to have one.
 
My son was prior ( National Guard). They fly in, stay the night at a hotel (last year it was the Doubletree near Newark airport (EWR). They are then bussed in to West Point the day before R day and have to do paperwork. They are then marched in formation for R day. It's interesting to see them with out their enlisted rank. After that...they are cadets like the rest. We attended the RDay. If you do, be there super early. They March them to RDay earlier than they state in paper.

I completely agree with this one. He'll want to upgrade a bit when he graduates, no sense spending money now for up keep on something he'll only drive on occasion.

Congratulations to your son, what an opportunity.

Thank you! We've been discussing that and it sounds like that's what he will do although he's not happy about it. Doesn't make sense to pay insurance and take care of it for that long.
 
In 2017 he'll be able to buy something cooler, or the same truck for cheaper. :)
