Whew, what a rollercoaster ride!!!

After dreaming of attending the Naval Academy all his life my son finally applied last fall. He's doing extremely well in school and athletics and we all thought he had a good chance.

Well, that dream came to an abrupt end when he received the letter from our congressman. No nomination!!! We live in Southern California and heard that it was pretty competitive here, but still my son felt like the rug had been pulled out from underneath him.

To rub salt on open wounds he had the interview with his BGO the next day, and you can imagine that the atmosphere was a bit dampened. Strangely the BGO ended up on the note "strange things can happen".

And so, several weeks later, a strange thing did happen: the congressman had a change of heart and nominated my son after all. Now the mad rush to complete the application (he still needed to get his CFA done and sent in).

Today we received a thin letter. Oh no!!! But what a surprise, it said my son is guaranteed an appointment if all required documentation is handed in  They must have reviewed him before the CFA results arrived.

The excitement in our house is off the charts:wiggle::biggrin:

That is exciting! I live in Northern California myself, so I know how competitive the nominations are! Congratulations to you and your family - you definitely have reason to be proud!

It sounds to me like your son was pretty impressive, whether it be on paper or with his B&G officer... I know that nominations tend to go to those who have an LoA (Letter of Assurance - what you received in the mail today), since they have already received the stamp of approval from the Naval Academy. However, it sounds like your B&G officer was impressed and saw how badly your son wants this, and gave a good word for him. Be sure to thank him again and again!

Awesome news! Wait until you get the big envelope, then the excitement begins.

Thanks for all your nice words. It definitely seems like it is meant to be.

Does anyone know the approximate time frame for the packet of information to arrive after they have accepted their nomination...Is it called the Order to Report or something like that? Wondering about details of what to bring and not to bring, etc.

It's a permit to report to the academy--you'll get it in mid-April--it will have all the instructions.

Good luck!

I thought the $2,200 charge for the initial outfitting had been eliminated. Is that still in effect? Thanks.

The class of 2012 did NOT have to pay the $2000+ up front cost as in previous years.

The Permit to Report package (to be sent to you in April) has all sorts of paperwork associated with it. Some must be completed ASAP, and some must be hand carried on I-day. The instructions were fairly easy to follow.

You will also be asked to take on-line math placement tests prior to I-day. Other validation and placement tests occur during Plebe Summer.

Congrats to all! My Plebe (and I think she speaks for all of 2012) can't wait for you to be Plebes instead of her/them!
