What does this email mean? Is it a LOE? USMA at West Point invites...

Received an email today from West Point admissions that reads,

"Only a few outstanding students are invited to apply to the USMC at West Point each year." You are one. Begin your USMA application now.

Dear XXXX,

Your outstanding high school record has been noticed by the USMA at West Point and we think you should apply for admission!

It goes on from there. I have already been excepted to the first session of SLE and already do have an application open for next year. Just curious if this is the LOE I've heard about or just something they send to a lot of people?

Everything I've done since I was 13 was to prepare myself for acceptance to West Point! I was very excited to receive this email but not sure if it means a whole lot or not.

Thanks in advance for sharing your past experiences with acceptance.

No, that reads like a poorly written mass mailing. Hopefully those are just your typos.

An LOE has the word "encourages" in it (ie admissions encourages you to remain competitive) and authorizes an overnight visit. I doubt that LOEs are handed out this early for the class of 2020. An LOE will show up in your portal and/or be mailed to you.

An LOA has wording to the effect that you are assured of an appointment if you meet X, Y, Z criteria. I would guess that an LOA would also show up in your portal and/or be mailed to you. Not sure if you get a heads up from your FFR.

Was hoping that someone who had some first hand knowledge would answer. Not looking for grammar correction or mysterious punctuation responses. Time wasters for all of us.

ca2midwestmom gave you a good response to your question but if you want another one - that is not a LOE.
Sledge was pointing out 2 typos/misspelled words.
You've got a little bit of an attitude that I would suggest dropping.

Oh very sorry all, didn't know typos were not allowed on this site. I'm certain you've never made any.

Noped, nobody never made tipos or useded bad grammer; however, most of the senior posters here also have a limit on the amount of arrogance or sarcasm they accept in a young candidate's postings. It is especially true of those in the military that don't want that type of attitude amongst their ranks or alumni. Watch your tone, your posts aren't always as anonymous as you might think when an RC pieces together clues to ID you.

I did give you first hand advice as my current USMA cadet received an LOE. Didn't have the time to go dig out his letter for you yesterday. What I posted above is correct. What you received was a mass e-mail. Sorry to disappoint. Enjoy your time at SLE but lose the attitude before you get there. ;)

@kbugs2020,

' "Only a few outstanding students are invited to apply to the USMC at West Point each year." You are one. Begin your USMA application now.'

USMC may be only 1 letter off, but it is way more than just a grammar or spelling issue. USMC at West Point does not exist. If this is what was typed exactly in the email, then you need to contact whomever sent it from the admissions team and let them know that they made a major mistake that may have been sent to a lot of people.

If you made the error… pay attention to detail, and don't get sassy.

Funny--I was just reading a blog post this morning about the entitlement generation and how some of them think they can say anything they want to anyone they want. Here's a link if anyone is interested in reading it: http://addins.kwwl.com/blogs/anchormom/2015/04/the-entitlement-generation
My signature at school says "grammar and spelling always count."

Hopefully that group is not the "burgeoning demographics" that scoutpilot sees the new Army commercial aimed at.

Your a big boy I think you can figure out by looking at the timeline that LOEs don't come out for a while longer. If you get accepted please use the same demeanor you have been posting with and see how far that gets you.

How is this helpful, civic29?

I believe our OP will enjoy many hours of "encouragement" should he ever be "excepted" to USMC.

That was quite rude. Not the way to help a clearly less informed individual, hopefully you'll learn that over the next four years. Be constructive, not destructive. Embarrassed to have you being so unkind while representing our future class.

I was only sharing the same attitude he gave others. He shouldn't expect kindness if he's going to be rude to some veteran posters and a moderator.

Hey Civic - first my intent is not to come down on you at all! Just did not want to let a learning moment pass by! :) As we say in our organization – FEEDBACK IS LOVE!

Next - speaking from a perspective of being in leadership for the past 20+ year at multiple levels I am so very excited about and so very proud of the career path you and all of the new cadets have chosen – leadership offers rewards you truly cannot begin to imagine until you have an opportunity to fundamentally influence a person you are leading.

With that I offer a potential alternative way to look at this situation.

You responded with “I was only sharing the same attitude he gave others. He shouldn't expect kindness if he's going to be rude to some veteran posters and a moderator.”

While that is a leadership approach – I would offer – every single person you will ever lead deserves and should expect kindness, empathy, respect and compassion. And as a leader – you have to set the example of behavior for those you serve and lead.

Does this mean you as a leader do not address performance/behavioral issues? Absolutely not – you have to provide specific and timely feedback each and every day you lead people.

Does this mean you as a leader are not to have the tough conversations that need to happen in the moment? Absolutely not – it will be your responsibility to have the conversation the person you are leading needs to hear.

This does mean however – you always approach these conversations with respect, compassion, empathy and respect. No matter how emotionally disrupting the situation is – the leader’s role is to provide guidance and counseling and not to let the situation escalate into destructive behaviors. While it may feel good to throw out a shocking reply – a good question to ask yourself is, “is the relationship in a better place having said that?”

Just wanted to offer a few words of friendly advice and another way to approach similar situations.

Anyway- you and every member of the Class of 2019 have such an incredible experience ahead of you and you have proven to date you all are up to the task.

Congratulations to you on your appointment! R-Day is just around the corner!
