Marine Option availability and cross town affiliates

We are just starting our application process and had a few questions. Thanks in advance for all the responses, this forum is a great source of info.!

1. Are there separate placements or spots available for Marine option scholarships? A certain allotment per school?

2. When selecting schools, can you put cross-town affiliate schools as your first option or do you have to put the primary unit. If awarded a scholarship to unit with cross-town affiliates, does it mean you can go to whichever school, main or its affiliates?
 
1. Yes. Your DS when he applies for NROTC will select Navy or Marine Option. He can only select one. They conduct separate scholarship boards. I believe the Marines only have 2 boards, I think this year's boards where Oct and March. Kinnem can verify.
2. You can put cross towns. Make sure your DS does his research into those options carefully and talk with the MOI about how this works for labs, PT, etc. Cross town situations can be easy or difficult, depending on distance and traffic. 15 miles might not seem a lot. But 5:30 Am PT is early and then trying to go 15 miles in traffic back to class can be challenging. The specific schools know and understand how this works better than anyone for each Det.

A scholarship will be awarded to a specific school. Make sure your DS applies to all the schools he lists on his application. It seems every year kids get scholarships to schools further down on their lists and they ignore applying to them for reason. Come April and they have a scholarship to a school they are now beyond the deadline to apply.

"Five college choices The Naval ROTC Scholarship is awarded to a specific school affiliated with an Naval ROTC Unit. The Unit resides at a host school and there may be affiliated or "cross-town" schools within the local commuting area. You must select five (5) choices for the college or university you want to attend on the NROTC scholarship Each of your five (5) choices must be for a college/university at a different Naval ROTC Unit. There are over 70 units, and over 160 different colleges and universities(for a listing of Naval ROTC Units and associated schools, see https://www.nrotc.navy.mil/colleges_nrotc_unitsXP3.aspx). You may not select a unit more than once; this includes the cross-towns. For example, if you select Drexel, you may not select the University of Pennsylvania as another of your choices. College choices are used for initial placement at particular NROTC unit only. If you are awarded a scholarship, it will be for one specific school and may not be used at any other school affiliated with the unit's host school. You must apply to, be accepted at, and enroll in your assigned school in order to utilize the scholarship. Applying to all five of the choices will increase the chances for acceptance and enrollment and will therefore increase the opportunities to use a scholarship if selected. "

Thanks, that clarifies it for me. Talking to colleges directly about cross town challenges is especially good point.
