Hello everyone. I need help with a situation that has come up recently. I received a 4 year type 7 AFROTC scholarship for any approved major and will be attending UC Davis this fall. I will also be doing AFROTC at CSU Sacramento. The problem is I got admitted into Davis for Biological Systems Engineering and I applied for this before I ever knew I was going to get an ROTC scholarship. Since Bio Systems Engineering is not an Air Force approved major, I was told that now I need to switch my major to an approved major before May 31st in order to be able to commit and activate my scholarship. If not, then my Scholarship will not be activated and taken away. Unfortunately, UC Davis has this policy where they do not allow majors to be switched until after the first quarter is completed. Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

I had kinda the same thing when I first enrolled at a different college when trying for a program. Email someone important and let them know the situation and ROTC. May have been wrong but I emailed the dean of students... My counsellors said no at first but the next day after the email they called me and said my degree program was in the process of being changed. Can always try. Otherwise I'd speak with recruitment officer at your ROTC det.

I emailed a counselor in charge of undergrad admissions yesterday about my problem. At least now I have hope knowing there's a chance. Thank you for the help.

I had a similar problem. I switched my major to something that was very similar to my old major, but this new major wasn't approved by the air force. The reason some majors aren't approved is (usually) because no AFROTC cadet has gone through all of the paperwork to get that major approved yet. So I talked to my det and got it approved no problem.

I was already in school when I did this, so your circumstance is definitely different. Call someone ASAP, did you get any contact info when awarded your scholarship? I would also recommend contacting your new get, they'll definitely help.

I hope you find what you are looking for and solve your problem, but may I ask what your stats were when you received the scholarship? SAT/ACT, GPA, ECs, Sports? Thank you very much!

Hello. I assume you are interested in getting the scholarship. If so I wish you the best of luck! Now for my stats. I was on varsity tennis all 4 years and was the number 1 seed on my team for three years. I was a captain my senior year. I'm also in AFJROTC and was an operations squadron commander with the rank of cadet major. My junior year, I was an OIC for the Honor Guard with the rank of cadet 2nd lieutenant. My overall GPA was 4.0 but my sophomore and junior year GPA's was a 4.17. My ACT score was a 27. I wished I studied more for the ACT but I got that score last minute. Hope this helps you in your future endeavors. Once again, I wish you the best in your pursuits!

Just for clarification for me and any future students,

Say a college offers a major in their school of engineering that is on the approved technical majors list here: https://www.afrotc.com/scholarships/schools
But that specific major is not an "approved" technical major on the school's individual profile: https://www.afrotc.com/locator/college-detail/id/170 and/or https://www.afrotc.com/locator/college-detail/id/211

Does this mean there is no chance of using a scholarship for that major? I want to major in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, which is on the approved major list on the main AFROTC website. I plan on contacting the schools I am applying to and asking if there is any way to get that major "approved." But since I saw this thread I was wondering, were you successful? Was there paperwork to get a major onto the list of approved technical majors? Thank you.

Just some advice, keep this in mind when going through school and ROTC. There is always a way and a lot of the times all it takes is asking or letting someone know what the problem is.

Hello. So originally I didn't see the major I wanted to do for my school. Each school you're going to has specific majors. For example, I was deciding between UCI and UCD. UCI had only sociology out of all the approved majors on the list. For Davis, there wasn't environmental science but after contacting my scholarship technician and the ROTC detachment, I managed to get that major uploaded to my personal scholarship website to choose from. Just call the detachment you plan to go to ahead of time and see if they offer that approved major for their detachment.
