Question regarding Orders

My son's report date for AVBOLC is not until Jan. 2016. As of yet he has not received his orders. My concern is that there have been talk that once commissioned, they will not be able to get a new CAC until they report for BOLC. That's all well and good except without the CAC they can't get into their AKO or email, how will they get any information or for that matter their orders.

My older son had his orders for AVBOLC before he graduated, granted his report date was much earlier, June 1st.

Has any other cadets not received their orders yet, have you been advised as to how you will receive them. My son has received no input as of yet on how this will all work out, he is checking again with his cadre, just thought I would ask here if anyone was in the same situation.

Thanks

DS same boat! Has orders for his BOLC in October but nothing beyond that, and same for about half of his ROTC class. He commissions on Sunday and graduates on Monday - have been hoping we would be hearing something a bit more concrete by now...

Got an update from my son this morning, he said that their HR person will be emailing his orders to him when they come in, and he says he doesn't need a CAC to access AKO.

agp312,

Does your son have his actual Official Written Orders. The only thing my son has received so far is his start dated for BOLC. Other then his official orders, there is not much else he'll get, he will get his follow on orders from BOLC. Are you talking about unit assignments?

My son is in the same situation. He went to the local Naval Base (even though he is Army but it is the only military installation anywhere near where we live) and they would not issue him a new card because "he is not updated in the system yet". Even though he had all of his paper work with him. They said he probably won't be able to get it until BOLC.

Jcleppe,
DS is also in the same situation. All he has is a copy of a letter of intent that he signed for AD less than a week ago. Previous to that he had continuity with the reserves, even though he was changing Branches/units...Now, once he commissions on Friday, he is no longer a reservist. Because he was one of the last assigned from 2015 class, he anticipates not going to BOLC until 2016, and is not sure when he will get orders or dates...
I am sure AKO access has not even crossed his mind at this point. He has to go in and pick up some kind of packet on Monday morning...I will make sure he discusses this at that time...
THANK you for bringing up the subject...

Yeah, I bet he's still running around with a big grin right now. It's the Commissioning Packet he'll be getting. I'm sure the HR person in his battalion will keep him informed as information comes in regarding his BOLC.

Have a great time at Commissioning/Graduation, we're heading over for our son's this weekend as well.

He should be able to (and is entitled to) get a CAC once he commissions by providing the memo "discharging" him from ROTC and appointing him to 2LT, as well as his oath of office. He will, however, have to be updated in the system first, which can take some time. His HRA should help him get that necessary paperwork, but of course many card offices can be difficult to work with in these situations where people are in somewhat gray areas. If he wants to wait til BOLC, no problem, but if he wants and needs one now, he is certainly able to.

Thanks Bull, I'll let him know to talk to HR.

If, for some reason, that doesn't work, I can dig up the right papers he should need. If he has those, and the letter that says he's entitled to a CAC card and the ID card office still won't give him one, then that's an issue that will need to be taken to a supervisor or IG. Don't let them send you away if he needs one.

If you take in a copy of your appointment orders to the local CAC office they should be able to issue a new ID. However, the existing CAC credentials should continue to be valid and allow access to enterprise email until a new card is issued. While accessing AKO without a CAC is possible, the end of AKO email means a CAC will be needed for access to emails.

I started a thread last year about my DD's challenges related to having lost her CAC card at the northernmost point in the US while on a week-end excursion during CTLT in Alaska (summer 2013). Because she was unable to replace it, she spent her whole Senior year of college unable to access Army enterprise email. This caused great angst as she knew she was not getting information that she needed to have. Sometime in the spring she found out through AKO (using a tip from these forums!) that she was scheduled to report to MI BOLC first week of Sept. After commissioning in June, she set up several different appointments at local military installations over the summer trying to get the card, but every time she went and tried, her info wasn't in the system the way it needed to be in order to issue her a CAC. I believe her orders (which had not shown up at the time of graduation) came through the HR tech at the college battalion. She ended up finally getting a CAC at Ft Huachuca the day before BOLC started. Fortunately she had stayed in contact with a CULP friend who was in the BOLC class before hers, and he was able to help her with some of the stuff she needed to prep for BOLC.

HR handles all of the orders and PCS mumbo jumbo but at the time we could access AKO because enterprise didn't exist ;)
