I'm not sure if you have to bring black socks too, but if you do, I'd recommend cotton over other materials. In my experience, when we started wearing black socks over the summer, the cotton ones just worked better for me. They absorbed some of the sweat, so it didn't just cook in my shoes (leathers and boots). I also had dressier black socks which did not work as well. After the summer, when we weren't beating the crap out of our feet, those nicer socks worked just fine, but during the summer, it was good to have tough socks.
I'm not sure how advanced our socks were in 2002.
Your feet can get pretty nasty, all day in leathers or boots or running shoes. My toenails turned black (because of my socks). As swabs we wanted to be ready each morning, so some would try to wear socks to bed (remember Chase Hall had no A/C at the time). Cadre would check to ensure swabs weren't wearing their socks to bed.
I feel like we were issued socks too, but I could be wrong. I had Gold Toes…. I do know that. HA!
