I'm just curious if anyone on here has heard/had experience regarding college sports and ROTC.
I've talked to my upcoming college coach and he said he's fine with me doing ROTC, and I've talked with the Cadre at my Battalion and they are fine with it. I am not required to attend PT according to my cadre because of sports lifts/work outs.

I have to be done with all my classes at 3pm so we can practice and lift. I know labs are once a week (about 99% sure). What time do they usually occur? I'm also attending a cross-town school and my commute to lab is about 45 min.

Also, again if anyone has experience with this position I would greatly appreciate some tips to balancing and insight on how both your Coach and Cadre respect each others needs for you to be places.

Thanks in advance!

Participation in a sport is at the discretion of the Commanding Officer. Nationally, all branches support athletes in D1 sports. The reality is not all COs do. You need to gain a clear understanding from the current CO as to what they expect. Realize that once there is a CoC you may not have the support you did previously. You will not win a battle with a CO. If the new one recommends you not dropping the team, it would be a good idea to listen.

I'm not sure I agee...You are a college student and a Cadet. When you are a college student the "Commanding Officer" doesn't have much say in what you do (unless perhaps you are at an SMC). If you want to join a Fraternity/Sorority, play a sport, or run for student government officer you don't need to ask the head of the ROTC department first. What you do need to do is adhere to your contract and work with your cadre to make sure there is a clear understanding of what is expected of you. There are probably PMS's or cadre out there that are going to make it hard for you to play a sport or even make you chose., but in my opinion they are doing the program a disservice.

In our program we have 13 varsity athletes out of approximately 80 cadets, and we work with the athletes and coaches to make sure they can participate in their sport and meet the requirements ROTC.

This guy seems to be making it work

Anecdotal but DS played 4 years of hockey while in AROTC. The season began mid August and ended mid March. He had 3 different PMS's during that time and all of them encouraged his participation in hockey. He had similar waivers of PT times and sometimes had conflicts between FTX and games but CONSISTENT, PROACTIVE COMMUNICATION allowed for easy resolution. He did not have a commute. His freshman year he was getting up when his suitemates were going to bed o_O but it worked! Do not expect much free time, realize this is what successful adults do to meet their goals.

Probably helps that his Coach is a West Point grad!
Agreed, but I'll bet his coach isn't the one making the allowances for him to pursue his sport and his vocation.

Agree! Man, that is the dream. National championship team, top education and commission afterwards! Guess I had 2 of 3! I played on some amazing teams, but was never to a Duke level. Loved every minute of it.

How many of those 18 are hockey players? ;)

Clarkson and St. Lawrence, D1. I'm betting zero Kinnem. First, they are probably all Canadian, and the Canadian hockey "flow" is not a regulation AROTC haircut!

COA,
Having recently been through the process, I have to disagree.
"You may participate in a D1 sport on a not to interfere with ROTC activities" sounds a lot like CO discretion to me.
That does not meet my definition of supporting athletics.
The Navy folks were the worst, but heard that from a couple Army folks as well.
Air Force seemed to be be consistent, but the sample size was small. Also, AF has the lowest level time commitment of the three.

As to the question of the labs timing, these are typically scheduled as classes in your university's student information system. You may be able to see when they are scheduled for the next term.

And my daughter's experience was the same as others. Strongly encouraged by the cadre.

According to my son one of the highest ranked on the OML for his MS year is his buddy who is a football player. I'm not sure how that cadet did it but he clearly figured out a way.

I've got one of the captains of our cross town women's team, and I had the goalie for the St Lawrence women's team a couple years ago. She didn't finish the program, but it wasn't because she couldn't balance the two. We do a lot of training and interaction with the Men's team at Clarkson, but I'm not counting on getting a recruit anytime soon from that program.

these guys have definitely drank the Koolaid...now I just need to find the one that wants to take the next step.
