I will be attending West Point after I finish prep school and I am looking for advice on choosing a major. What major would best prepare me for a career in politics? It is my dream to one day run for congress. Thanks.

Also, are there careers in the army that would make the transition easier? If so, what might they be?

USMA doesn't offer a political science major but it does offer majors in American Politics as well as Comparative Politics. I imagine they are similar.

There are 3 History majors offered at USMA -- American, International & Military. It would seem to me that a History major would be appropriate. What's that saying -- "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." George Santayana

In today's world I would think economics might not be a bad thing to study for politics either.

The last CPA in Congress lost in the last election. It's pretty clear very few members of Congress "get" economics. It might be good to get someone in there who does….

FYI, not quite true. There is still at least one CPA in Congress - Patrick Murphy (FL-18)

I would recommend Physics. Too many of our elected leaders try to dictate it. It would be good to know the basics before trying to legislate it. ;)

And according to his bio, he's one of nine CPAs remaining in the House……

so I'm really wrong!

Thanks for the heads up.

I love the idea of a Physics major in congress. Or Math. So many of our reps forget that 2+2=4, not 4000 a seems to happen with their brand of money laundering.

You know...call me silly (many people in the past 30+ years have) but...

WHY would your major matter? The people aren't going to elect a degree, they're going to elect a person. You must be THAT person, not THAT degree.

Just saying...

1000% agree. Your degree will not matter at all, what you did after you graduated will!

I kind of laughed at this post, because it might be just me, but my question would have been how much money do I need to save so I can run a political campaign?

Major in something you desire, and than be a success as an Army officer. Parlay that into your next career. Network in your next career to fund that campaign war chest.

You are insanely young, instead of worrying about a possibility a decade from now, how about majoring in something you enjoy. Thus, theoretically you may graduate at a higher class rank. That can work for you when it comes to your career field. That career field can equal experience. Experience can equal a better job for your after your military career. So on and so forth.
