I was just wondering how cadets are selected for the summer programs such as soaring and jump.

Each summer is divided up into three three-week periods.

You submit a preference sheet with how you rank desire for each program. Between freshman and sophomore year everyone will take ESET for one period. Another period you may take soaring, jump, space or unmanned aerial systems (this is where your preferences come in) and then the remaining period will most likely be vacation. The preference sheet doesn't guarantee you a program but they try to get everyone their first or second choice of program.

There are different programs for the other summers. If you miss jump then you have the opportunity to take it your senior year. If you miss soaring and you still want to fly then you have another opportunity during the powered flight program.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Order of Merit figure in? In other words, the higher you are ranked (GPA, MPA & Athletic scores), the better chance of getting your first choice.

I thought it did as well, but I got my absolute last choice of program and I'm top 5% overall.

Congrats on the ranking! That's not easy to do!
So sorry to hear that you didn't get your first choice, though.

By the way, my DD's surgeon (who's a pilot as well) said he never got his first choice. In fact, he didn't get an opportunity to do the jump program his entire time at the Academy. However, they flew him back while he was in pilot training & let him spend the 3 weeks in the program. One way or another, if you want to jump, you'll get the chance.
