VMI Mandatory Items questions

So we've been shopping every weekend for several weeks for the "mandatory items" list prior to STP. I'm already not a fan of shopping, but try to find affordable and available 6 X-Long twin flat sheets sold separately and keep your sanity (the answer is target.com for just over $11) Ha ha!. Anyway, the list is almost marked off, but I want to ask some questions of those who've been through this already before it's complete:
  • For the black compression shorts, he already has about 5 pair of what I would consider underwear because they are shorter than what is in the picture (looks like 9-11'), but he thinks they will do. They are black but have colorful bands (like Adidas). Do they care about that? Do they care how long they are? This is one of the more expensive items, which is why I'm asking.
  • I saw the posts about bringing a fan. We have a nice old-fashioned looking wire fan that is <18" in diameter, but is on a stand. Do they frown on fans that tall? Does it need to be a desk-top fan?
  • We are driving him out there with his mountain of goods, but he's flying back home for the month before matriculation (then back). Does anyone have any suggestions on storing his goods for the month he's home? Should we ask his coach about that? Is that something they are used to doing? Poor guy has had to answer SO many questions already. :)
Thanks for any help you can offer. Lexington is a LONG way from Oklahoma....

Are you on Facebook?

If so you might also try your questions on the VMI Parents - Family, Friends, Cadets and Rats page.

Send me a PM with your name and I will try to help get you access

I am on FB and sent a request to join the group. Not sure how they verify you are legitimate...

I've "pinged" the VMI group letting them know there is a Mom and an Appointee that wants to join and to let me know who you should resend your request to. Will let you know what I hear back.

Here is what I heard back:

"Hi Falcon A! Everyone who requests to join the group are sent a message to verify they have some type of affiliation with VMI. The group description states that anyone requesting membership will be sent a message and to check their 'Other' folder [in Facebook messenger] in their messages. We found it necessary to add this step as with over 2,000 members, we are a target for people trying to sell to or spam the group.

If you could send me the names of the people who have sent requests, I would be happy to add them.

Thanks for your help!

Thank you! The "other" folder on Facebook messages is terrible. There's no notification that you have a message in there. I found a message in that folder a year after someone found my stolen wallet and tried to contact me! I'll look it up and reply, but as you saw, they let me in already, thanks to your help. Here we go!

VMI - STP - is there a list for what the kids need for STP? Should we go ahead and purchase the laptop? I see where they list a dress code, but that is about it as far as I know.

We haven't found the STP list either. Planning use the STP letter as our guide. It includes guidance on what is needed -- sheets, pillow, fan, etc.

We did buy the laptop so DS could get use to it and use it for class.

If you haven't already, ask for membership to the newly created rat parent Facebook page. It was explained to me that it's 2016+3 because they won't be "class of 2019" until they outlast the ratline and become cadets. There are great preparation question and answers there already and it's a closed group- away from the ever-present eye of the cadre. https://m.facebook.com/groups/1643105325907112?ref=bookmark

Hi OkieMom.
I can't really answer your questions but I thought it might comfort you to know that on the FB page for West Point Class of 2019 Parents, there were many, many conversations about the required compression shorts. Many parents had never heard of them (including me), were horrified at how expensive they are and wondered just why there was a need for this particular item. WE laughed at how we never thought that we'd be discussing underwear on social media. lol

In terms of price, the cheapest place to buy them is Sams club (The package worked out to $5 apiece). On line the best price I could find was $20 for a 2 pack, so this was even better. A friend who has a membership there got them for me. I was not able to find them at Costco.

Good luck shopping!

For all of the VMI Parents of incoming VMI Rats Class 2016+3, there is a Facebook site for us that has a lot of great information. Search for "VMI Class of 2016+3 Parent Page". Let me know if you have trouble getting in.
