Here is a seemingly dumb question that should have been asked years ago: how often are room inspections during AY? I know of the terms AMI, PMI, and SAMI, but how frequent are they?

It's regiment-dependent, but generally speaking it's:

SAMI: 2x a semester
AMI: every weekday (usually graded 1-2x/week)
PMI: every weekend and some weekdays on an as-earned basis

There also are things called MAMI's, which is a kit layout w/a graded AMI--usually 1x a semester, if at all.

Very informative, thank you. But when I visited back in February, I asked my cadet why his room was so messy (not really messy, but by inspection standards, it was) and he said they were in PMI, so they didn't have to keep it clean for that week… does that make sense?

Yes, that would make sense. PMI isn't intended to be a "I don't have to clean my room" pass, but that's what it sometimes is in practice--more so with upperclassmen than plebes. A week of PMI is a lot, but definitely not unheard of.

Also, as an addendum to my previous message: AMI switches to PMI every weekday at a certain time (that time varied from 9:30 am to lunch formation over the years I was familiar with it). This is a wonderful practice that brings joy to many hearts in gray, joy that is only surpassed by being in PMI the whole day. :)
