Confused about bringing luggage

Hello,

I was told bringing a backpack is the best deal and nothing more than that. However, I was wondering if I were to bring a luggage in addition to my backpack, will they hold it and give it to me sometime after BCT or will they make me carry it all throughout the in-processing day?

Thank you

Don't do it. You will carry everything you bring. You will also be singled out for being different from everyone else, and not in a good way. Don't be another "Box Boy" (see below)! Have anything else you want after BCT sent to you.

From cnet.com (June 2009) ...

"For many associated with the Air Force Academy, the most memorable basic cadet of the day--and maybe ever--was a tall brown-haired kid who emerged from the bus lugging a giant box on his shoulders. The scene was absurd, and he was immediately set upon by several of the cadre, who shouted out things like, "Are you kidding me," and, "Did you bring your Xbox and your TV?"

Box Boy, as he quickly began to be called throughout the Academy, had clearly miscalculated, and not only would he likely never live down the shame of having brought this giant box with him, but he'd also have to spend the entire rest of the day carrying the box on his shoulders, as basic cadets have to lug their gear with them the entire first day."

What are you thinking you need to bring that would require a suitcase? A small backpack is all you need. Unless you were instructed to bring it, leave it at home.

Thank you all for the feedback. I was just curious to know because the appointee kit did mention bringing a luggage. I wasn't sure if that meant extra from the backpack or not. :)

Let's be real. The only thing you need, is the clothes on your back, an extra set of underwear, socks, maybe 1 extra shirt, toiletry kit with soap, shampoo, razor, deodorant, tooth paste and brush. Bring your wallet, ID, about $150 in cash, and a copy of all the paper work you've done. Hopefully you remembered to make 2 extra copies of everything you did. Bring a copy with you and leave the 2nd copy at home.

You don't need anything else. If you bought boots early, bring those. Otherwise, mom and dad can mail it to you later or bring to parents day if they are coming. Bottom line. If it needs more than a backpack, then it's too much.

DO NOT bring anything other than a backpack and even then MAKE IT LIGHT. EVERYTHING will be supplied. Even with Chritcorp's list, there are things you can eliminate. All on his list will fit into a small, lightweight backpack. Remember, you will be carrying everything ALL DAY LONG in addition to what is issued to you.

If a backpack is too small, a smaller sized duffle bag (the gym bag type) would also work. The handle makes it pretty easy to carry as a bonus. Hope this helps.

So having a duffle bag is perfectly fine even tho they suggest a backpack?

If girls are still required to bring a certain number of athletic bras and pairs of underwear as well as a small number of feminine products -- as they were when my daughter went to InProcessing -- a small, VERY small light weight duffle (like a small gym bag) will work if you need to use that rather than a back pack. A small back pack is better but a small gym bag is ok.

Technically, you can bring whatever works for you, but keep in mind that you are going to be carrying it around on I Day.

Bring it in something you can easily carry in one hand, and you should be fine.

You can review this pic to see the types of bags prior year Appointees/Basic Cadets brought:

As soon as you get off the bus, that backpack will never be on your back, or your shoulders. It will never see your right hand either, so find one that is light and strong.

This is off topic, but why do Cadre wear berets? Is this just for BCT or do all of the Cadets where berets? I don't seem to recall seeing berets during the Appointee Tour. I am just curious........

My guess...if you already bought boots, wear them...might as well since you will be in them after inprocessing anyway. That will lighten the load in a backpack. Everything else should be easy enough to fit in a small pack.

Just a thought...wearing boots on I-Day may bring a little extra (unwanted) attention
Leave them at home, have mom/dad ship them to you after BCT or bring them PW. Won't be able to wear them until after BCT anyway, will have to wear issued boots during BCT.
