(NROTC) Uniform question

DS received his uniform questionnaire in regards to measurements. The one item he's unsure about is boot size. We only have one military surplus stores where we live and they didn't have what he needed to try on. Anyway, DS wears a size 14 running shoe; would he request a size 14 boot?

Any other uniform tips or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you!
 
Is your son able to go to the unit to be measured this summer? When DS had his college orientation, we set up an appt. and had him measured there. My son is built like a tree trunk (I think he wears the biggest cover the navy makes!) and I was glad he was able to try stuff on. As to the boots, I think we went down at least a 1/2 size.

Unfortunately, going to his unit to get fitted wasn't an option.

The email stated for them to complete the measurement questionnaire and email it back. They'll be issued their uniforms based on the information provided.

DS went to a tailor for measurements, but isn't sure on boot size. So, you recommend going down a 1/2 size?
 
I always wore a 1/2 smaller in boots, sometimes even more depending on the brand. Brand can play a bit roll in it too. Out of curiosity I went to the Bates Boots website to look around as that is a common brand of boots. It didn't give a size conversion or mention anything. I did read some reviews and the customers who wrote reviews stated they were true to size. Also remember the NROTC unit is responsible for getting him stuff that fits. So if it doesn't, he needs to ask about exchanging it. Sounds like your DS is a big boy, so they might not have tons of 13s and 14s around. More than anything units usually use it to help order their supply for the year and there are enough students that they can exchange things around. Don't settle for something that doesn't fit. When the time comes have your DS try everything on speak up if he needs to exchange it.

DS is at work. Will ask him later but he has narrow feet (huge head, skinny feet go figure) and that may have been part of the reason. I still think they could switch boots out if they had too. His unit had an entire room of uniform stuff.

The SA do something similiar. They ask for size but it is just used for a supply stock. They have plenty of extras to fit everyone. It just helps adjust numbers, especially for those who happen to be huge, tiny, tall, etc.

Thank you, NavyHoops! I'll have DS look at the website and let him know to speak up if the boots don't fit.

It would make sense that units use the measurement chart as a guideline knowing they may have to tweak orders.
 
Typically the boots are true to size but there is variation by brand. Some people recommending going 1/2 size larger to accommodate thick boot socks. Agree with all that ultimately the unit should be providing a size that fits. Should not be a problem.

DS went to the last "mom and pop" shoe store in town, and had them do his measurement for him. Didn't buy anything from them this time, but I know that over the years we at least put up the window treatments on the addition to their house. :wiggle:
