NROTC scholarship tuition payment question

Does anyone know how the 4-year NROTC scholarship tuition payment works? My son is an incoming freshman with a four-year NROTC scholarship, and the fall tuition payment at his school is due August 15th, but he doesn't report to the NROTC Unit for orientation week until August 18th. I assume his scholarship won't activate and the benefits won't be paid to the school until after he reports to the unit on the 18th. So the question is, is he supposed to pay the tuition on its due date, and then get a refund once the Navy activates his scholarship and pays the school the tuition? Any info anyone has greatly appreciated, thanks!
 
The schools have dealt with NROTC and are well aware of the process. The unit will notify the bursar about the scholarship and they will wait for payment. No need to pay on the due date which is good because I would never expect reimbursement.

This was our experience and I think it is universal. I will tell you that we did call the bursar and confirm that they knew our DS was a NROTC scholarship and they did. They advised how to proceed.

I had this panic as well last year. But the Navy paid my son's tuition before I even got a bill. They were very efficient with all of their payments. I would not worry at all.

Not the case at all with the Army. We had to pay our daughters (and son's) first payment their freshman year and were later reimbursed. With my daughter, we never heard anything from anybody after that. However, with my son who is two years behind my daughter, I frequently get the notices from the school that his tuition needs to be paid. I always panic and call the school but they reassure me that they know he is in AROTC and not to worry. Obviously, the notices are auto-generated but I go thru this almost ever semester. Only two more semesters to go!! :)
 
Perhaps it depends on the school. For our DD, her school never asked for anything to be paid upfront. The school has a very good relationship with NROTC, however. She even had other outside scholarships that paid well after the semester started, but the school waited for those to be paid without asking us to pay anything.
 
I'm pretty sure it's a college decision vs service ROTC. The college will always have the last word on how it gets paid. Some will want payment up front, some will wait on the ROTC scholarship tuition payment.
 
My DSs first year NROTC did not pay any tuition until the last month of school. Yes, including the first semester. Got a lot of letters from the school, but each time I called the school I was told not to worry about it.
Most schools are used to any antics coming from the units.

DS contacted his school. After they verified he was NROTC they told him not to worry, navy will take care of it, and to ignore any letters stating otherwise.
 
My son will be a sophomore at Norwich . He received a NROTC scholarship this year . Norwich told him he will have to pay Full tuition and then will be reimbursed . We have to take out loans has anyone had any luck not paying at Norwich till the scholarship activates. I plan on calling the Bursar this week to see what we can do .
 
My DS goes to a different university that is a cross-town campus. They always want payment when due and din't care that he had a scholarship coming. They would have even charged him an outrageous late fee. He has taken out some small student loans, plus the did have college based scholarships that help a lot. Once the ROTC money arrived the college used that to reimburse itself for the scholarship money they had given him. If I remember right, the navy was very quick on sending the funds for the second semester. You might want to check if Norwich charges any crazy late fees.

It must be different because he earned it while at Norwich.
I will be attending Norwich as a rook in a few months on an AROTC scholarship, and they told me to ignore all tuition notices.
 
DS's school requires payment of tuition before he can register for classes. They have an option to pay on an installment plan. I make an initial payment which allows him to register. Once NROTC makes tuition payment to school, then we are reimbursed by school for initial payment. This generalyl happens 4-5 weeks after the semester begins. There is a fee of $60 for the installment plan which does not get reimbursed.
 
We had to pay DS tuition a few weeks ago as entering freshman with a 4 year AROTC scholarship. The school used his merit funds that were offered with admission and we paid the remainder of funds. I'm hoping we don't need to do this each semester, but it seems likely because the school wants to be paid.
